Eagle Project On Organ Donation

EagleProject_040115A

EagleProject_040115AMartin Clarke, a Life Scout of Manhasset Boy Scout Troop 97 is working towards his rank of Eagle Scout. His Eagle Scout Project is based on organ donation in New York State. The reason he selected organ donation as his project is because he is honoring his grandfather, Angelo Stekardis. His grandfather lived almost seven additional years due to his lung transplant.
Clarke is holding training for his volunteers at the Manhasset Library. When his volunteers are trained on organ donation he will hold Organ Donation Drives at North Shore Hospital, St. Mary’s Church, and the Plandome Fire Department. He has other locations which he is firming up as well.
Sadly, New York ranks 49th in the nation in organ donor registry. Every 15 hours someone in New York State dies waiting on the transplant list. Clarke is hoping to save 400 lives by doing this Eagle project. For each person he registers, eight lives can potentially be saved and 50 lives potentially improved. His beneficiary is Live On NY or www.donatelifeny.org.
Clarke will be at North Shore Hospital on April 6 and 10, St. Mary’s Church on April 19, the Plandome Fire Department on April 21. He is working to connect with the Manhasset Girl Scout leaders on April 13 at time of publication, but that date was not yet confirmed. April is organ donation month.
