Chris Herren Project Purple Event
The Plainedge School District is hosting an assembly featuring former NBA professional basketball player Chris Herren, who will give a presentation of his descent into drug and alcohol addiction, his miraculous recovery and his new life mission to share his story with the hope of making a difference in the lives of others. Summer Reading Deadline Extended
Applications are still available in the Children’s Room for Plainedge school district students entering grades 6 and up in September 2015. No previous library volunteer experience necessary. A volunteer orientation for all applicants, however, is required even if you have volunteered for Summer Reading Clubs before. Completed applications are now due by Friday, May 1. Movie: The Imitation Game
The Bar Harbour auditorium presents a 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. screening of the movie The Imitation Game. In 1939, newly created British intelligence agency MI6 recruits Cambridge mathematics alumnus Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to crack Nazi codes, including Enigma, which cryptanalysts had thought unbreakable. Turing’s team, including Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley), analyze Enigma messages while he builds a machine to decipher them. Turing and his team finally succeed and become heroes, but in 1952, the quiet genius encounters disgra ce when authorities reveal he is a homosexual and send him to prison. Little did officials know, they were actually incarcerating the pioneer of modern computing. Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley. (2014; PG-13 2hrs).
