District Upgrades Water Plant

The Plainview Water District Board of Commissioners Joel R. Kessler, Andrew N. Bader and Marc B. Laykind are providing updates to the community regarding the replacement of the well screen at plant no. 5’s existing well. A well screen is a filtering device that permits water to enter the well from the saturated aquifer, prevents sediment from entering the well and serves structurally to support the unconsolidated aquifer material. The well provides two million gallons of water per day to Plainview-Old Bethpage homes and businesses. The infrastructure upgrade will help maintain the continued delivery of high quality water to the community.

“From time to time, wells need maintenance repairs,” said Laykind. “The original well was built in 1960 and this vital screen replacement will allow the district to utilize the well for another 50-100 years. We are always looking to make sure the Plainview community has the most up-to-date infrastructure to ensure consistent water delivery for many years to come.”

The Plainview Water District routinely inspects each plant to confirm it meets or exceeds all county, state and federal regulations. Plainview Water District representatives determined that a problem related to the well screen developed, thereby necessitating its replacement. The old bronze screen is being replaced and upgraded with a stainless steel screen. This proactive modification in the well will not only preserve the well, but save a significant amount of money for the district in the long-run. It is anticipated that the well will be returned to service during the summer of 2015.
