Obituary: Nelson Doubleday, Jr.

Nelson Doubleday, Jr. passed peacefully on June 17, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was born July 20, 1933 and was the son of Nelson and Ellen Doubleday of Oyster Bay.

Doubleday was a graduate of Deerfield Academy and Princeton University. Upon graduation, he joined the Air Force where he was stationed at Myrtle Beach, SC. He later joined the family publishing business in 1958, rising to become president and then chairman until it was sold in 1986.

Doubleday was an avid sportsman. He owned the New York Mets from 1986 to 2002, during which time they won several National League titles and the 1986 World Series. He also was an owner of the New York Islanders Hockey Team, winning the Stanley Cup in 1983.

Doubleday was an accomplished golfer, loved sailing the world on Mandalay, shooting at his plantation in South Carolina and the valleys of England. He thrived on having his family and friends enjoy his passions with him.

Doubleday was a retired trustee of Deerfield Academy, The Green Vale School and the New York Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sandra Pine Doubleday, his sisters Ellen Violett, Neltje and the late Madeleine Martin, his daughters Wendy Havens (John), Lillian Woodworth, Nanki Doubleday, Phoebe Timpson (Bill), his step-children Duke Barnett (Lindsey) and Alexis Barnett, 13 grandchildren, one great-grandson and his beloved dogs, Max and Moby.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2015, St. John’s of Lattingtown, Locust Valley.
