Scouts Go Sailing

Floral Park’s Girl Scout Troop 1410 ended their scouting year with a sailing lesson aboard the Christeen out of the Oyster Bay Waterfront Center. The Christeen, a 40-foot gaff rigged sloop, is the oldest oyster sloop in America and a National Historic Landmark. She was originally built in 1883 for Captain William Smith in Glenwood Landing for the purpose of harvesting oysters in Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. The Scouts (and moms) enjoyed a beautiful day learning the basics of sailing as well as had a lesson in marine life. Captain Pete and his crew gave the girls a guided-tour of the waterfront as well some history of the area. It was the perfect way to end a terrific year for our Junior Scouts.
