William Bauer, aka Bicycle Bill, passed away on Aug. 21, 2015 at Glen Cove Hospital after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 73 years young. The doctors and staff at the Don Monti Cancer Center and the family practice at Glen Cove Hospital provided exemplary support and care for him. He was born in Brooklyn and is remembered by his lifelong friend Bill Higgins and his wife MaryAnn. He started riding bicycles in Prospect Park and became the race director of professional racing for the Oyster Fest for years. He is remembered by his close friends Eve and Tony of Bayville and Larry and the group of riders who rode with him as he raced against cancer. He supported all organizations that keep Long Island waters clean. He supported the Massapequa Bike Club, Brands Cycle and Fitness, Huntington Bike Club, Triangle Cyclists and the original German Bicycle and Sports Club. His main goal was safety and as a coach encouraged all to “get out and ride.” He loved animals and rescued cats his whole life. Cremation was conducted by the Oyster Bay Funeral Home.
