Securing a 4-3 record and one game away from the playoffs, the Mineola Mustangs varsity football team defeated the Valley Steam South Falcons 12-7 on Saturday, Oct. 24. Coming off their 30-18 loss to Malverne, if the Mustang’s beat the Friends Academy Quakers next week, they’ll clinch a playoff spot.

After a 6-0 lead by halftime, Mustangs senior quarterback Matt Koswoski connected on an 11-yard touchdown pass with junior receiver Quinn Revelant in the third.

The Falcons (2-5) put seven points on the board with five minutes remaining on a 41-yard touchdown run and could have walked away with the victory, but threw an incomplete pass at their own 35-yard line with 46 seconds left. Revelant also stopped a potential first down on the prior play.

“This was a big win for us,” Mustangs head coach Dan Guido said. “Offensively, we probably could have scored one more time, but my guys did well.”

The Falcon’s home field, which has their baseball infield bleeding onto the football field, provided a different terrain for the Mustang’s to play on, as bursts of dust clouds emitted from the ground throughout the game—but Mineola, a young team, met the challenge.

“There’s not many fields like this left,” Guido said. “I haven’t played on a field like this is 20 something years.”

The Mustangs will play their last season matchup against the Friends Academy Quakers (4-3) on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. at Friends Academy’s stadium.

The Quakers were seeded 14th in the Nassau IV Conference, and the Mustang’s were seeded 12th.

Last year, quarterback James Gerstner led the Mustangs to the Nassau Conference IV finals against Roosevelt, where they lost 41-14. Kosowski, who started last year as a running back, replaced Gerstner as quarterback this year.
