Great Neck Celebrates Veterans Day 2015

Veterans DayThe Great Neck Veterans Day Parade Committee, led by Louise McCann, Commander of The American Legion Charles A. Fowler, Jr. Post #160, will commemorate Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

The parade route will start at the Alert Firehouse on Middle Neck Road at 10:45 a.m. and will proceed north to the Village Green. A brief memorial ceremony to honor, reflect and remember those who fought, are still fighting and those who perished will be held at the Wall of Remembrance located at the north end of the green.

Members of the Alert and Vigilant Fire Companies, the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department, local veterans, town and local officials as well as other dignitaries and members of Great Neck Boy and Girl Scouts will march in solemn pride to remember the heroism of those who served and those who are still serving, with gratitude for their service.

Formerly known as Armistice Day, the original concept envisioned by President Wilson was for a day of celebration observed with parades and public meetings, as well as a brief suspension of business beginning at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month.

Commander McCann noted that “it is important for all Americans to realize the cost of peace, especially in today’s unsettling world.”

She and all the committee members hope the community will show support for those in the armed forces who served and those who are still serving. For further information about the parade, contact Suzette A. Gray at 516-869-7694 or at grays@northhempsteadny.gov.
