Christmas and the holiday season have always been a very special time for our family. Decorating the house and our Christmas tree was something we looked forward to every Christmas season. It was something we did together as a family, and helped us stay close throughout the years.
On Sept. 29, 2013, we lost our oldest daughter Marie Ashton. Christmas was her favorite time of year, and in her memory, we started a foundation to help teens and young adults suffering from eating disorders and other addictive behaviors, which take the lives of far too many young people every year. Decorating our house these past three Christmases in her memory has helped us get through this time of year and has enabled us to create awareness of the disorder that took our daughter’s life.
In the past year, through our Christmas light display and other educational programs we have been involved in, we have been successful in increasing the awareness of how these disorders can impact the health and lives of young people. We have also continued working with a fantastic organization called Project Heal. Project Heal’s mission is to help save the lives of those suffering with eating disorders. This year, we are committing to provide a financial grant to Project Heal in memory of our daughter Marie, to fund someone’s treatment. We hope to be able to build upon this commitment in years to come, to help others receive the treatment and support they desperately need.
