It’s open season for Rep. Steve Israel’s seat in the U.S. Congress, but the most experienced and logical choice is still weighing whether or not to run.
Democrat Thomas Suozzi, former Nassau County executive and the man who may have become governor if not for an upset loss marked by the complacency of his local supporters, has the credentials and the potential to return to the political battlefront with his influence and personal appeal intact.
One look at the ersatz lineup of committed contenders clearly tells voters who is most suited to replace Israel, an eight-term Democrat from Huntington. Suozzi, of Glen Cove, is part of the well-known family tree that has proudly served the area with its leadership in government for years. Israel noted that his district covers parts of three counties, each with a Democratic chairman. He also said that he has put his Washington, DC, condo up for sale.
But Suozzi is through looking too far ahead. He just needs some bona fide backers to convince him that his candidacy will prove worthwhile.
