While many people are in full swing with planning their blooms, fruits and vegetables, some are cleaning off the lawn furniture and getting the grills prepped and primed for a full season of grilling and also getting ready for the post-Memorial Day pool and beach playtime. Others are dusting off their walking shoes, bicycles and motorcycles.
And while spring is always a signal of fun to come and people are increasingly in a carefree spirit, we also have to be practical and sound, more than ever. Pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists are already taking to the streets and highways, especially on Long Island. Many joggers, walkers, hikers and bikers love the ample stretches of trails and pavement from Queens to Montauk.
We are already seeing the increase in reports of “pedestrian struck” and “motorcyclist struck.” This vigilance rests, not only with car and truck drivers, but it’s the responsibility of pedestrians, bike riders and motorcyclists alike. The rules of the road are the responsibility of every single person, no matter the age nor the mode of travel. Teach your children the rules of the road for being a safe pedestrian, for being a safe bicyclist. Walk your bike across intersections, use crosswalks, learn proper hand signals for turning and stopping.
To all of the users of the road…Pay attention. Cross at the crosswalks. Use your turn signal. Know your blind spots. Slow down.
It never hurts to be a little more vigilant and aware of our surroundings. To the Anton readership family, be safe and have an easy season.
