John J. Nigro, a longtime resident of Mineola, passed away peacefully on April 16. He is survived by his wife Cecilia, three children Anna Ievolo (John), Assunta Galeno (Edward) and Vincent Nigro; and five grandchildren, Jennifer, John, Andrea, Michael (Andrea) and Matthew Nigro. He was 92 years old. Born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to Vincent Nigro and Anna Betts Nigro. When he was 19 he joined the US Army. He served two-and-a-half years on 40 mm anti-aircraft coast artillery before spending six months in the combat engineers on Okinawa and Japan.
He started as a jewelry engraver, hand finishing serial numbers for United States currency. Later on he engraved gold stamping dies and sculptured embossing dies for Revlon, Estee Lauder, Mary Kay and the line for Sophia Loren cosmetics. He retired from A&M Steel Stamp and Die Company in Mineola. He was a parishioner of Corpus Christi Church where he was an usher, member of the K of C and St. Vincent DePaul Society. He was a member of the Army Honor Guard and attended many gravesite funerals of fellow veterans. He moved with his wife to Rouses Point, NY and lived there 12 years before coming to live with his children in Massapequa.
