Plandome Road was the scene of a massive cleanup project which had the youth of Manhasset, Plandome and St. Mary’s High School making things spic and span. The Coalition for a Safer Manhasset, in conjunction with the Town of North Hempstead, the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Manhasset Civic Association, came out in full force on Saturday, May 14, to make Manhasset’s downtown pristine.
The Sidewalk Sweep had well over 60 participants working together to clean up trash, weed the plantings and sweep the debris from the sidewalks. The Town of North Hempstead provided Earth Day T-shirts to all the participants. All the students I spoke with were very motivated, including Manhasset High School junior Katherine, who said she wanted “a cleaner Manhasset.”
Under the leadership of Katie Miller, who spearheaded the event with the assistance of the local Manhasset organizations, she coordinated the eager participants to their assigned areas. Girl Scouts Donna Callery and Sophie Colalillo of Troop 523 were on hand to talk about pedestrian safety. Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth came by to speak with the participants and members of Manhasset about the concerns of the town and possible solutions. Bosworth urged residents and constituents to let her know any concerns that they may have. Community Service Hour Certificates were issued to students who participated. Many thanks to Mrs. Petras and Manhasset’s National Honor Society and Mrs. Tomlinson of St. Mary’s Community Service group.
