Manhasset residents may have noticed that the Onderdonk House recently received a noticeable improvement through a service project by Troop 71 Eagle Scout candidate Jack Shelley.
Scouts installed over 300-square feet of framed flower gardens along the fence line to beautify the property’s southern border next to Northern Boulevard. Under Shelley’s leadership, Scouts connected and assembled the large pressure-treated framing members, affixed them to the ground, then returned to fill the space with soil and plant flowers, shrubs and other flora.
An Eagle Project is an opportunity for a Boy Scout applying for Scouting’s highest honor to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a service for the benefit of his community. For his service project, Shelley raised the funds and organized the endeavor himself to benefit the Onderdonk House, built in the 1830s, recognized as a historic landmark and operated by the Strathmore Association. This is just one of three recent projects at the Onderdonk House and of many Eagle Projects that have benefited the community in Troop 71’s over 90-year history. Learn more at www.plandometroop71.com.
