Runners and walkers from Mineola and beyond are invited to join in the fun for what is one of the most unusual five-kilometer courses on Long Island—the Lynn, Gartner, Dunne & Covello Sands Point Sprint on Sunday, Aug. 7.

Mineola law firm Lynn, Gartner, Dunne & Covello will be returning as the lead sponsor of the event, and partners John Dunne and Ken Gartner are both planning on running the race. Gartner finished last year’s sprint in 28:13 and Dunne finished it in 33:30. Both of them are looking to break those marks this year.

This year’s sprint will once again benefit the Sunrise Association, whose mission is to bring back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings. They have done this through the creation of Sunrise Day Camps, year-round programs and in-hospital recreational activities, all offered free of charge. Sunrise Day Camps are the world’s only full-summer day camps for children with cancer and their siblings. The fun, friendship and smiles continue year round through various camp-like programs and in-hospital services.

The 5K sprint presents runners and walkers with an opportunity to traverse a unique combination of paved roads and runner-friendly woodland trails at the Sands Point Preserve.
Runners and walkers who sign up for the run can expect all the usual Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) amenities—awards in five-year age groups running from 10 and under through 85 plus, as well as Clydesdale/Athena Awards, a top quality commemorative T-shirt to every entrant and a nice variety of post-race door prizes. Once again this year, the post-run festivities will include post-race refreshments courtesy of DiMaggio’s Trattoria and refreshing craft beers courtesy of Greenpoint Harbor Brewing Company.

Mineola runners have always played a big role in the Sands Point Sprint. In the 2015 edition of the event, a large local contingent was led by P.J. Diskin of Mineola, who finished in 37th place overall and took home the second place award in the 60-64 age group, and District Court Judge Scott Fairgrieve, who finished in 87th place overall.
