The summer months have provided an opportunity for Levittown’s English as a New Language (ENL) students to improve their reading and writing skills during the district’s ENL Summer Reading Program, held at the Levittown Memorial Education Center. For three weeks, students in grades K-6 have met with teachers for one-and-a-half hours each weekday to hone their reading comprehension, writing, listening and speaking skills.
ENL lead teacher Carol Rimler explained that some of these students have recently moved to the U.S., while others live in homes where English is not often spoken. Rimler also noted that the ENL teachers used content area resources to help strengthen the students’ academic and socialization skills.
“The knowledge they received in this setting was invaluable and will help the students be more prepared for the coming school year,” she said.
