Acknowledging volunteer school board members throughout New York State, more than 700 boards of education were honored during the annual School Board Recognition Week. In his official proclamation, Governor Andrew Cuomo wrote, “The men and women serving as members of school boards are dedicated to children, learning and community, and devote many hours of service to elementary and secondary public education as they continually strive for improvement, excellence and progress in education.”
Great Neck established its first board of education in January 1894. In conjunction with the annual recognition, the Great Neck Public Schools Board of Education is traditionally honored by students.
Students from the Village School (VS) and SEAL Program made presentations at the November board meeting. VS student Phoebe Miller read her original poem “Gratitude” and provided copies of it to board members. VS student Sabrina Geffner produced a brief video interviewing her fellow students who thanked the board for all it does, including making VS possible. SEAL students Serena Chen, Scott Stich and Jordan Swope presented the board with a framed poster montage of good wishes and thanks.
