Nassau County Legislator Donald MacKenzie announced that the legislature has secured funding for the third and final phase of the reconstruction of West Shore Road in Bayville, which collapsed during Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.
Due to the road’s continued safety risks, the county legislature has approved legislation to re-allocate New York state funding from other road-paving projects throughout Nassau County to pay for the West Shore Road project. An engineer from the Nassau County Department of Public Works testified that the impact of a nor’easter could cause the road to collapse again if the final phase of construction is not completed immediately.
“By using the New York state funds, we finally have a way to get this project done now and get it done safely for local residents,” said MacKenzie. “Critically, this funding will allow the project to be started this year before the storm season. Completing the project on time will have construction performed now so the roadway will be open during the upcoming summers to benefit local business owners affected by the closure. This project ensures that the localities will not be stranded by a failure.”
