Farmingdale High School recently welcomed artist Edgar Jerins to lead a collaborative lesson with art teacher Regina Nicholas featuring realistic self-portraits. Students learned the tradition of self-portraiture dating back to the Renaissance. Classical use of compositional techniques guided the students while they drew their self-portraits in charcoal. The drawings were then layered with shellac and completed with oil paint. The results produced realistic and striking paintings that seem to illuminate with an inner light. Jerins is a classically trained artist who currently teaches at the New York Academy of Art. His work is exhibited in several museums across the country and Europe. Special thanks to Farmingdale Schools Fine Arts Director Rita Padden, who coordinated BOCES Arts in Education funding to make this collaboration and multi-disciplinary experience possible.
