U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) stopped by the Global Institute at LIU Post in Brookville this week to discuss current issues facing the nation and hot topics pending in Congress.

Zeldin, the congressman who represents the East End of Long Island, shared his insights from sitting on the financial services and foreign affairs committees Dec. 11, the same day an attempted suicide bomber injured three in Manhattan.

“The Global Institute is bringing together some of the best of Long Island’s leaders and great minds to be intimately more involved with leaders of our country on topics that are really important to America’s future,” Zeldin said. “It’s… very encouraging to know that meetings and dialogue like this are taking place through the global institute all year round.”

The congressman, who is up for re-election to his third term next year, is one of only two Jewish Republicans currently serving in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“It’s very refreshing to be able to interact with a diverse group of Long Island leaders and hear what their perspectives are on these challenges and hear what their thoughts are so that we as leaders in Washington know what passions and pursuits back home are of the highest priority,” he said.

“It’s just good to hear generally that they think that we’re on the same page and on the right track on certain aspects of what’s in front of us,” he added. “While we were talking about national security, we also had an opportunity to talk about the tax bill before Congress, we were able to talk about the pursuit of higher education and student debt. There were many topics on everyone’s mind that are very important to Long Island.”
