The Port Washington Public Library and Landmark on Main Street will celebrate Port Washington’s international community at the library’s World Festival on April 15 from 1 to 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and by Landmark on Main Street. Visitors of all ages can meet representatives from more than 35 countries and explore their cultural traditions in music, art, dress, foods, games and crafts. The festival will include performances of Bangladesh dance, Spanish jazz, Korean drumming, Israeli music, youth performers, belly-dancing and much more.
“The best part of the event is to see people from different parts of the world smiling and working together to make this a huge success,” said Peggy O’Hanlon, English For Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Coordinator.
Asia and the Americas will make the library their home while Europe, Australia and Africa will be represented in Landmark’s gym. There will be performances throughout the day on both sides of Main Street including jazz drummer Napoleon Revels-Bey, who is scheduled to appear at the Jeanne Rimsky Theater at Landmark.
Children and their families can to spend the day going from country to country, getting their “passports” stamped so they can experience a taste of various cultures. Each country represented will include finger food from their country, a craft or activity and information about their country’s culture, language and history.
