As the weather turns warmer and the sun shines a bit brighter, mornings and weekends can be the perfect times to take a hike along one of the many trails in Nassau County. Grab a walking stick and maybe your pup or two, drive over—or walk depending how much movement you want to do that day—to a local trail for some fresh air and the natural beauty of the outdoors.

Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail

Extending from Massapequa to Woodbury along the border of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail is about 15 miles long and takes about eight hours. The route begins at the east end of Massapequa station and walkers then head east on a paved path between the railroad tracks and chain-link fence, which leads to a junction with another path.

While on the path, hikers will come upon the west shore of the Massapequa Reservoir, a popular spot for fishing with breathtaking views.

Trail View Park

Almost hidden on Jericho Turnpike (8101 Jericho Tpke., next to Stop & Shop), Trail View Park in Woodbury is a 400-acre, 7.4 mile park that offers both a walking and bike trail. Throughout the walk one may experience hardwood forests, marshes and succession fields with elevations ranging from 60 to 300 feet above sea level.

While perfect for hikes, runs, walks and bikes, the location is also ideal for birdwatchers year-round because the park is located on the Atlantic flyway.

Sands Point Preserve

Located in Sands Point, the Sands Point Preserve (127 Middle Neck Rd.) offers 216 acres of natural and landscaped areas to explore, with six marked trails through diverse habitats of woods, open fields and pond. The preserve also offers monthly themed walks for locals to explore different aspects of the environment, ranging from wildlife, conservation issues and practices to create a healthy, sustainable environment.

Muttontown Preserve

Nassau County’s largest nature preserve, Muttontown Preserve, has 550 acres of fields, woodlands, ponds and estate grounds. The preserve includes miles of marked nature trails with local wildflowers, trees, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

Located just off of 25A Northern Boulevard, off Muttontown Lane, the preserve is home to a 2.5 mile loop trail good for all skill levels.
