If you’ve ever thought about adopting a pet but weren’t 100 percent sure, now is the purrfect time to foster a cat or dog from a local animal shelter or rescue. It’s a win-win for all involved, and without a permanent commitment (unless you want it to be). If you’re ready to adopt, even better. Read all about some wonderful cats and dogs available for adoption (or foster) right here!

Available for adoption at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter:

Decker

Decker is a stunning 2-year-old Australian Shepherd mix who came to the shelter as an owner surrender in December 2018. Decker is house trained, crate trained, and knows the commands “sit” and “come.” Decker used to live with other dogs and even a cat! Decker is nervous of strangers, especially men, so he’s ideal home is with a very savvy owner. Decker is suffering from myesthenia gravis, which is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles. Thankfully, he has a temporary foster who has taken him in and being in a home setting has greatly helped his MG symptoms, but Decker will need a new foster ASAP. Decker is a total love and deserves a forever home of his own…could that home be yours?

Duke

Duke needs a home and he needs one quick. Duke is an amazing dog, loves playtime with his friends and is incredibly sweet with staff and volunteers, but he does not like being in a kennel at all. He is so sad to be locked up that he waits for someone to take him outside to use the bathroom. This boy needs a forever home of his own. Duke would thrive with a family willing to work with him and a trainer to help him thrive.

If you are interested in adopting Decker or Duke, please call for more information at 516-785-5220, visit him at 3320 Beltagh Ave. in Wantagh or email  adoption@tohmail.org

Available for adoption through North Shore Animal League America:

Trip

Trip (adoption #H209719) is a quiet 7-year-old boy who can be found sitting sentry at his favorite cubby in his room at Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center. Trip is always quietly waiting and hoping that you’ll be coming by to offer him treats and a chin rub — a few of his favorite things! Although he is better suited for a quiet home with children 12 and older in age, he’s very respectful of his feline friends which makes him very popular with the roommates! Trip is FIV+ so he’ll be a purrfect match if you have an FIV+ feline at home looking for a new best friend — or better yet, choose a friend to take with him! Staff and volunteers will miss their favorite tripod (yep, only three legs!) when he heads home, but they can’t wait to watch him begin his new life with the lucky family who chooses him!

Petra

When Petra (adoption #BF2630) first arrived, she was so timid she didn’t want to come out to play. Once she moved into the cage-free Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center, the spark came back into her eyes and this 1-year-old lady is showing everyone how to have fun on her terms. Still nervous around humans, Petra has a take-charge personality when it comes to felines that her friends all find quite delightful! From engaging in wand play to exploring new heights, she is never at a loss for activities! Occasionally, she’ll even enjoy some ear rubs. Because she is still working out her feelings about us humans, a home with children 12 and older and a confident cat or two in it are a must for her future success.

Timothy

No one expected Timothy (adoption #H209967) to celebrate his first birthday with at NSALA but this shy tabby boy needed to feel confident with the humans on his own timeline. Timothy was born to be a cat’s best friend; he’s proven that with his curiosity and enthusiasm for playtime. Recently, he’s decided to learn more about the people visiting him, especially when they’re handing him yummy treats! This bright star in Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center has mastered clicker training quickly. Timothy is ready to join your family if you have children 12 and older willing to help him adjust to his first home, and a confident cat in it to befriend him.

Moonpie

All those treats Moonpie (adoption #BF3110) has been begging for has added a few pounds to this chubby fella. Now on a special diet, this proud 6-year-old boy is committed to daily exercise (he wants to be swimsuit ready for you this summer when you laze by sunny windows together.) For Moonpie’s maximum happiness, a home with children 6 and older is recommended. Moonpie appreciates one-on-one time with his humans so if you’re thinking about sharing your life with a soulful friend with a whimsical personality, Moonpie is the sweet clown you want.

Ava

Ava’s (adoption #BF3234) first impression of us was one of uncertainty. After she was rescued locally, staff and volunteers had hopes they could find her a brighter future, but this timid 2-year-old princess is just beginning to realize she is safe. It took some time, but they know she’ll find true love with a family very soon. For now, she is content to settle into her comfy bed and we’ve discovered she feels safest in the company of a calm confident cat.  Ava would do best in a cat-experienced home with children 12 and older to ease her into family life in a home.

Salma Hayek

If you’re a fan of Salma Hayek the actor, you’re going to love Salma Hayek the cat (adoption #WV0240)! This vivacious, friendly 1-year-old lady loves frolicking around her Cage-free room in Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center and would happily pal around with your cat if you need another feline friend in your home. Selma is a unique beauty and a purrfect choice for any adopter; she makes loving her very easy!

Available for adoption at the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter:

Angel and Blaze

Angel is a gorgeous 6-year-old Blue Nose Pit. Angel was dealt a bad hand in life, like many of her breed. Her former owner would leave her outdoors, unattended for hours. After she was rescued, Angel quickly became attached to the amazing team at the shelter. She is always eager to be around people and get some belly rubs. She loves long walks and is highly intelligent. She’s learned to master all agility course obstacles and loves a relaxing swim in the puppy pool. She would do best in a home with breed experienced owners and should be in a home where she is the sole pet in the house.

Blaze came to the shelter after being dumped in a county park, locked in a cage. But despite his sad history, he has truly begun to learn to love and trust his humans. This energetic 7-year-old Pit Terrier enjoys running around in the shelter’s dog park, eating treats, and when it’s hot out, splashing around in the pool. He can be a very loyal dog once he learns to trust you. Blaze knows his basic commands like sit, wait, give paw, and walks nicely on a leash. Blaze needs an adult only home familiar with big breed dogs, without other pets. His ideal family will spend time giving him the love (and treats) that he deserves, understanding that he had a tough life before the shelter.

If you are interested in meeting Angel or Blaze, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with them in a domestic setting, which includes the shelter’s Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs, and Dog Walk trail. Family Pet Meet and Greets and at home interactions are also welcome and an integral part of the adoption process. For more information, contact the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter at 410 East Main St., Smithtown, or call 631-360-7575 today!

COVID-19: Foster Opportunity: Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, our Animal Shelter has had to restrict public access, including our loyal volunteers. If you have no other pets or young children at home and are looking for a way to serve your community in this time of crisis, please consider signing up to be a foster. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens, dogs and puppies in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for extended periods of time. Download the Foster Application at smithtownny.gov

As always, thanks for reading and please remember to always adopt, never shop…pass it on!
