Under the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program, Chris Sims, a resident of Stewart Manor, a rising senior at St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset and a participant in the RYLA program, described his one-man community service project. Sims had volunteered to help liven up the recess area of his elementary school, the Stewart Manor School.
“I painted new targets on the wall next to the recess yard where kids play handball,” he said. “I also painted brand new hopscotch games on the blacktop for the kids. Two friends had recommended that I attend RYLA. I attended the summer program and loved it.”
The Mineola-Garden City Rotary Club supports RYLA and its mission. Run by students for students, RYLA is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts, where kids can develop their skills as leaders and build their confidence while having fun.
