West Islip appoints superintendent

Paul Romanelli
The West Islip Board of Education appointed Romanelli as the next superintendent of schools, succeeding longtime superintendent Bernadette Burns on Aug. 15. He joins West Islip from the Long Beach Public Schools, where he has served as the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction since 2019 and previously worked as the principal of Long Beach Middle School.

Freeman, a partner at Garden City-based law firm of Jaspan Schlesinger LLP, was elected vice president of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York. She is an experienced land use and zoning attorney, with an extensive background in public sector/municipal law. Simone’s expertise lies in executing public and private development, risk/site analysis, and litigation for public/municipal and private corporations.

This nationally recognized nephrologist, physician-scientist and medical education innovator, has been named Dean of the Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) at Stony Brook University. He will begin his tenure as RSOM Dean on Sept. 12. Dr. Igarashi comes to Stony Brook from the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Sanders has been appointed the superintendent of schools of the Department of Education in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. She has worked in education in the diocese for more than 20 years, most recently serving as principal of Holy Name of Mary Catholic School in Valley Stream, where she has worked closely with The Morning Star Initiative team, whose aim is to renew and transform Catholic education on Long Island.
