A 13-year-old student at Copiague Middle School was arrested early Monday morning for allegedly making a shooting threat over social media, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
Police say that the teen, who was not named because he is a minor, wrote in a social media group chat that he would shoot teachers and students at his school if it was in session on Oct. 24.
“The post was shared by multiple students and a parent notified school officials who called police,” Suffolk Police officials said in a statement.
The student has been charged with making a threat of mass harm, a class B misdemeanor. He will be arraigned at Suffolk County Family Court at an unspecified later date.
According to reports, Copiague High School dismissed students Monday due to a separate, unfounded bomb threat.
