Cutting Through Culture: Chinese Paper-Cutting Workshop At Charles B. Wang Center

On Sunday, Feb. 11, the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University held a Chinese Paper-Cutting Workshop with Master Ming Liang Lu. “Cutting Through Culture: Chinese Paper-Cutting Workshop” was part of the Wang Center’s Lunar New Year celebrations. In this workshop, participants dove into the rich traditions of paper cutting with a focus on animals, flowers, plants, and Chinese characters for good fortune.

With roots in the Han dynasty, paper-cutting is an ancient Chinese folk art that can be associated both with everyday life and celebrations. Normally, this art form is used to portray elements such as animals, flowers, and plants, which are often used as metaphors. For example, pairing lotuses and carps symbolizes continuous years of abundance. In his work, Master Lu mixes tradition with innovation as he adapts the art of paper-cutting to create three-dimensional portraits.

Originally from Shanghai, China, Master Lu is skilled in various art forms, including stone sculptures and stamp seal carving.  Apart from paper-cutting, he practices ancient Chinese art such as calligraphy and brush painting, boasting over 40 years of experience. His notable work portraying subway riders in New York City was featured in The New York Times in 2012.

The workshop was fully booked, attracting attendees ranging from families with young children to senior groups. Master Lu taught them the cultural significance of paper cutting, and participants actively engaged in hands-on practice, crafting their own pieces of art to bring home. Additionally, Master Lu showcased his renowned expertise by demonstrating a 3D paper portrait cutting.
