On April 13th, over 300 Tae Kwon Do grandmasters ( i.e., 9th degree black belts) representing 40 states attended the 4th annual convention of US Tae Kwon Do Grandmaster’s Society in Atlanta, GA. In recognition of the profound influence he had on the growth of this sport in America, Long Island’s Grandmaster, Hyun Ok Shin was presented the Society’s highest honor, i.e., the Myongjin (i.e., “top expert”) Award.
Grandmaster Shin was born in Seoul, Korea. After emigrating to the US in 1962, he became one of the first instructors to teach Tae Kwon Do in America. In 1974, he opened Shin’s Tae KwonDo Center in Floral Park, Long Island. As founder and Chairperson of United Chung Do Kwan he heads one of the country’s most prominent marital arts associations.
Today, Grandmaster Shin, as chairman of the United Tae Kwon Do Chung Do Kwan, continues to oversee instruction and activities of the Association.
