Suffolk County investigators have identified a woman whose skeletal remains were found off of a bicycle path in Setauket nearly a decade ago, but her case remains a mystery, the Press has learned.

The woman found  on the side of the Greenway Bicycle Path near Gnarled Hollow Road on March 22, 2015 has been identified as Lucie Van Heeckeren, who would have been 61 years old at the time, the Press exclusively reports.

“Cause and manner of death are undetermined, therefore it is unknown if she was the victim of homicide,” police said in a statement.

Investigators have said they believe the remains had been there for about a year before the discovery was made. Police had released a composite sketch of what she was believed to have looked like in the months after her death.

She had short brown hair and was wearing pink and black flip flops, a black and gray scarf, a brown shirt, a black/purple checkered cloth segment, blue sweater vest, brown/ black sweatpants, a brown/black t-shirt, a black overcoat, and knee-high pantyhose, authorities said. A large broken purple hair comb was found near the body, according to investigators.

Homicide Squad detectives are continuing the investigation and ask anyone with information on the identity of this woman to call them at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
