Three Glen Cove residents will appear on the ballot for school board elections, all vying for the two seats up for election this year.

Incumbent Lia Leone, former board member David Huggins and newcomers Brett Miller are vying for two seats, currently occupied by Audre Lynn Hustron and Leone. Hustron is not running for re-election.

The community will take to the polls to vote on the school budget and the board positions on Tuesday, May 20.

Lia Leone

According to the Glen Cove district website, Leone  was born and raised in the city and graduated from Glen Cove High School in 1994. She has two children in the school district and was first elected to the board in 2019.

Leone is a reading specialist in the Hicksville Public School District. She previously served on the district’s bond and education committees, and she currently serves on the policy committee, the website says.

Efforts to reach Leone for more information were unavailing.

Brett Miller

According to his campaign Instragram, Miller is a lifelong Glen Cove resident who has three daughters in the district.

Miller said on his Instagram that he has worked in construction, which will offer a helpful perspective as the district looks towards facility improvement projects in the near future. He said he has been a part of construction projects at upwards of a dozen school districts on Long Island himself.

“With big changes ahead—including a new superintendent and major district improvements—I believe now is the time for strong, experienced leadership,” Miller wrote on his Instagram.

Efforts to reach Miller for more information were unavailing.

David Huggins

Huggins is a former member of the Glen Cove school board and is running again this May. He is the vice president of Glen Cove Football and is the city’s junior football liaison, according to their websites.

Huggins does not have a public campaign profile, and efforts to reach him were unavailing.
