For the first time in school history, Great Neck North High School’s robotics team, Team 13375, known as the Goatbusters, won the Long Island regional championship and qualified for the FIRST World Championships in Houston.
The team competed March 1 in the FIRST Tech Challenge Long Island Championship at Hewlett High School. The Goatbusters entered the playoff matches ranked No. 1 and served as captain of the winning alliance.
In addition to the regional title, the team received the FTC Control Award for its robot programming. The award, sponsored by Arm Inc., recognizes teams that use sensors and software to enhance robot functionality, reliability and innovation. Judges evaluate autonomous operation, intelligent control systems and consistent high-performance robot operation.
With their regional performance, the Goatbusters secured a spot at the FIRST World Championships, scheduled to take place this spring in Houston.
The Great Neck North High School robotics team is coached by mathematics teacher Michael McDermott and science teacher Alan Schorn.
