Oh, your dog knows how to play fetch and roll over? That’s cool. Meet Buddy Mercury, the piano dog from Ronkonkoma here to howl you a song tonight.
Buddy the Beagle’s YouTube videos have gotten over a million hits, including one of his latest, a St. Patrick’s Day themed doggy ditty posted just last month in which Buddy rocks a green bow tie. And that’s just one of the dozens of vids Buddy has on his YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram pages.
“The song as always, heartfelt and the phrasing of the lyrics may eclipse Frank Sinatra,” commented one fan.
The self-taught piano pup is named for Freddy Mercury, the late lead singer of legendary arena rock band Queen. He even has a website where fans can buy merch, sign up for his newsletter, and download his latest hits. Because that’s the world we live in now.
As April 30 is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day, it’s worth noting that Buddy is a rescue.
One of the most highly anticipated concerts on Long Island is finally upon us, which is a triumphant event for many music fans, both young and old alike, for two reasons: its star and its venue.
For those who haven’t heard, Long Island resident and legendary musician Billy Joel aka “The Piano Man” will be performing the inaugural concert at the newly renovated Nassau Coliseum, on April 5, ushering in a new era of extraordinary musical performances on the Island!
It’s a long-awaited gig, and a long-awaited reopening.
The beloved venue—originally opened in 1972 and nicknamed “The Old Barn” in its previous life—has been an integral part of the Island’s entertainment fabric and collective history. It has hosted countless unforgettable performances, be they epic sports battles, or once-in-a-lifetime, for-the-record-books concerts.
Basketball legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving led the New York Nets to two ABA Championships at Nassau Coliseum through 1977 before they moved to New Jersey after merging into the NBA. The much-missed New York Islanders NHL hockey team, one of sports’ great dynasties, won four straight Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983. The Isles were longtime tenants before skating to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in 2015. Transcendental musical performances have spanned decades and included a vast array of bands and genres, among these: the Grateful Dead, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Metallica, Judas Priest, and many, many more.
Included on that list is the very last show before the Coliseum shuttered its doors for a $165 million renovation. Who played that noteworthy show? Yup, you guessed it: Billy The Kid!
Construction on the new digs actually started the very next day following the Piano Man’s performance, on Aug. 5, 2015. Renamed the NYCB Live Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the new and improved go-to spot for live sports and musical performances in Nassau County now features high-definition screens, widened concourses, brand-new seats, Long Island-centric concessions, and revamped restrooms, among other amenities. The new venue holds 13,900 seats.
That’s just what’s inside. Its outer façade—adorned with reams and reams of aluminum fins to depict our gorgeous dunes along the South Shore—reminds some observers of a spaceship. (X-Files, anyone?) An additional $100 million will go toward further upgrades and development surrounding the state-of-the-art facility.
This week’s upcoming spectacular is no exception to the Nassau Coliseum’s history of stellar gigs, and it too will undoubtedly be one to remember!
One of the most famous native Long Islanders, Joel will likely lead all those in attendance along a musical journey spanning his storied career, with spectacular renditions of such blockbuster hits as “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant,” “We Didn’t Start The Fire,” “Piano Man,” “An Innocent Man,” “Big Shot,” “The Longest Time,” and, of course, “Nassau State Of Mind”—eh, I mean “New York State Of Mind!”
The gig has been sold out, as Joel would say, “For The Longest Time,” but don’t let that stop you from visiting this amazing new concert space and checking out any combination of outstanding music acts coming there throughout the upcoming weeks, months and years!

Heavy snowfall is on the way, and that means it’s time to review some fundamental Winter Snow Storm & Blizzard Pet Safety Tips to help keep your beloved critters safe and warm throughout the winter storm.
Bone-chilling temperatures, strong winds and blizzard-like conditions aren’t just hazardous for humans. Winter storms create a dangerous environment for dogs. Cats, birds, reptiles and other pets, too. Knowing the best preparation techniques and precautions to undertake when a powerful snowstorm affects your area will not only help you ensure the well-being of your human family members, but your four-legged, scaled, whiskered and winged family members, too.
That’s why it’s always important to include your pets in your winter storm preparation plans. The following are guidelines and procedures to help you prepare your home and animals for the cold temperatures, mounting snow, and blistery winds associated with winter storms.
1. Don’t leave your pets outside!
Cannot stress this first tip enough. If weather conditions are too dangerous outside for you and your human family members, why would you possibly think they are not dangerous for your beloved pets as well? They are!
2. Bring your beloved animals inside.
Get them out of the cold. Shelter them from the snow and freezing rain. Protect them from the ice and any related dangers that heavy snow accumulation and frigid temperatures create—including fallen trees and powerlines, treacherous roads and streets and the possibility of them becoming snowbound, trapped, and incapacitated.
This also applies to outdoor cats. Felines are a resilient and mysterious bunch, indeed, but when it comes to the fury of Mother Nature, even the most veteran outdoor cat is no match for the extreme cold and substantial snow and ice.
3. Always remember: A snowstorm is absolutely no place for a pet.
Animals can easily become inundated and overwhelmed by even minimal amounts of snow and ice and frigid temperatures, just as humans can. It is not safe for people to be outside during a winter storm, and likewise it is not safe for animals and pets. Thinking logically about this can not only perhaps help save the life of a family member, but also the precious life of your cutesy, furry creatures. Be smart. Keep your family indoors!
4. Do not—repeat—do not let your dog off the leash after heavy snowfall.
Winter storms can render canines’ famously acute sense of smell useless. When dogs lose their sense of smell, they can easily become disoriented and lost, which leads to our next Winter Storm Pet Safety Tip.
5. Make sure each and every pet wear tags and collars—and make sure all their tags and collars contain up-to-date identification information.
This is a very important tip, especially if for some reason you did allow your pets outside or they somehow escaped to try and roam around outside during a winter storm. In the hopes that these loveable critters would somehow be discovered by neighbors or passersby or perhaps, sometime after the storm, wandering nearby streets and communities, you would want whoever found your adorable creatures to be able to return them home into your caring arms. They cannot do that unless your pets are wearing tags and collars that contain up-to-date contact information. Please, ensure they have these potentially life-saving gear, and please, make sure that information is updated!
6. If, by chance, you do not heed the above calls to keep your pets indoors during a winter storm, then please, at the minimum, keep a close eye on them as they roam outdoors.
Pets of all types can easily become confused in heavy snow and ice, and as mentioned, can find themselves disoriented, overwhelmed, and alone.
Canines can lose their scent in all the dangerous weather conditions, and felines, as well. When this happens, familiar smells and landmarks cats and dogs use for critical navigation simply disappear.
7. Stock up on all pet food and medicines ahead of time.
Mother Nature is unpredictable, and even light or moderate amounts of snow and ice can make travel extremely difficult, or even impossible. That’s why this tip is so crucial. If you stock up on all your pets’ foods and supplies and necessary medications in advance of inclement weather, this eradicates the possibility of your dear critters facing a food shortage and direly requiring medical attention for lack of important medications. Again, treat your pets as you would any other member of your family. Stock up on food and medicine and other necessary supplies so you can weather out that winter storm, together, safely and prepared!
8. Prepare for the possibility of a power outage.
Now this is also a very important tip, especially if your pets are of the amphibious or scaly kinds. Fish need electricity to operate their tank filters and clean out toxins from their water. Snakes and skinks and anoles and salamanders and other reptiles require their heat lamps and warmth stones to stay, well, warm and hot! Some pocket pets—for example, sugar gliders—also need to stay warm.
Perhaps then, it is time to invest in a backup generator for your home. This is a wide decision, in any case, since such a machine will also serve to keep your human family members warm, and ensure the proper functioning of many lifestyle appliances, such as portable heater, lights, and yes, even refrigerator, operating throughout the storm, as well as during its aftermath.
Backup generators, then, can also ensure your pets—especially those requiring warmer environs than others—continue to receive those all-important, and in some cases life-saving, services to keep them safe. True, backup generators can be expensive, but their value during a severe winter storm can be absolutely priceless, since they can, in fact, save lives.
9. Prepare pet emergency kits.
Just as you are advised to create emergency kits, also known as storm preparedness kits, for human family members, so too should you prepare these for your pets. What is in such a specialized kit, you may ask? Medical records, pet food, extra water, medications and even pet First-Aid supplies. Anything that you and your pets may need to survive in anticipation of the absolute worst should be included in these all-important kits.
10. Clean your pooch’s paws!
This is a very important, yet often overlooked tip. Always be sure and clean off your canines’ paws with a moist washcloth when returning indoors from outside. This is because those chemicals and snow-melting salts so commonplace to rid stoops, sidewalks, and even streets can be extremely painful to your pooch! If your furry friends lick or eat some of that stuff, too, they can become sick!
A canine coat and booties can help protect their paws and keep them warm and snugly against the driving winds and snow! (Plus, they’re uber-cute!)
11. Develop and emergency plan.
An emergency plan should be a top priority for every family in the face of major winter storms, or any forecasted storm, for that matter, but it is vitally important that these precautions also account for your pets. Such contingencies include the aforementioned emergency plans replete with necessary foodstuffs, water, medicines and other supplies, but also strategize for a universally agreed upon meeting place for all family members to rendezvous at should the home become inhabitable and a mass evacuation imperative. So too must pet owners include safeguards in these critical strategies for their pets! Take some time before the impending storm hits to search for pet-friendly shelters that will not just protect you, but your precious pups and cats and birds, reptiles and marsupials (did she just write that? Why yes she did!), too!
Always remember: Do not leave those pets behind!

Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/pianist Fiona Apple set social media sites ablaze Tuesday afternoon after dropping a blatantly anti-Donald Trump tune on her Tmblr page titled “Trump’s Nuts Roasting On An Open Fire.”
The song, sung a cappella in Apple’s signature low, almost mournful, smoky-jazz contralto, switches out the classic lyrics of holiday fave “The Christmas Song”—which famously includes the well-known line “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire”—for the more direct reference to the president-elect’s anatomy, along with many other critical switcheroos referencing xenophobia and racism throughout the roughly one and a half minute serenade.
“Trump’s nuts roasting on an open fire,” she sings, her dog occasionally barking in the background. “As he keeps nipping at his foes. You’ll cry creepy uncle / every time he arrives / for he keeps clawing at your clothes.
“Everybody knows some money and entitlement / can help to make the season white,” she continues. “Mothers of color with their kids out of sight / will find it hard to sleep at night.”
Apple, 39, published the track on her Tumblr account “Fiona Apple Rocks,” and included an audio version, full lyrical sheet, and selfie video—in which she sings the dark parody while gazing down at the camera through black-rimmed glasses and her dangling, long brown hair. “The Christmas Song” was originally penned in 1945 by songwriters Bob Wells and Mel Tormé. Apple’s caustic version comes amid a spike in hate crimes nationwide since the Nov. 8 presidential election, with some perpetrators citing the former reality TV personality-turned-commander in chief in the attacks.
The multi-platinum-selling artist exploded onto the music scene in 1996 with her debut Tidal, for which she earned a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for its single “Criminal.” Her follow-up, 1999’s When the Pawn…—an abbreviation of a 444-character title/poem—was also nominated for a Grammy, as was 2005’s Extraordinary Machine and 2012’s The Idler Wheel…
The award-winning musician caps the number off by tearing up a photo of Trump and punctuating her message with a “Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas / Donald Trump, f@&k you.”
he’s got black boys in hoodies locked up on his sleigh
and every working man is going to cry
when they learn that Letch don’t care how you live or if you die
Sooo I’m offering this simple phrase
to kids from 1 to 92
although it’s been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
Donald Trump, f@$k you

A body of a man was discovered buried in the backyard of a North Bellmore home Friday, Nassau County police said.
Acting on a tip from the public, authorities began a search of a yard on Pea Pond Road in North Bellmore, where they discovered the body of an older man in a “shallow grave” with a gunshot wound, a police spokesperson said.
Members of the family living in the residence told authorities the deceased was a relative, had taken his own life, and had requested to be buried in the yard, police said.
So in case you’ve been living underneath a really phenomenal PokéStop for the past few weeks (and if you have, kudos to ya), Pokémon Go’s developer, Niantic Labs, has announced a tremendous Halloween treat for fans!
Niantic’s Pokémon Go Halloween Event begins October 26 and lasts until November 1!
During this spooktacular stretch, expect some very special Pokémon Go Halloween surprises.
For starters, each time trainers catch, hatch, and transfer Pokémon, they’ll earn double the candy. You heard that correctly, fellow Pokémon adventurers, double.
Secondly, Buddy Pokémon earn four times their typical amount of candy. Yup, once again you’ve heard that correctly: four times their usual amount.
On top of all this, who will be popping up more often throughout Halloweeen as you play disguised in whatever costume you’ve chosen this year (Pikachu, perhaps; hopefully not a Creepy Clown)?
Ghosts, and additional “Spooky Pokémon,” of course!
All this amounts to a truly unforgettable Halloween, that’s for sure, and some really incredible gameplay, to boot.
Well, for starters, all that extra candy will help you strengthen your team in your quest to take over more gyms, as feeding your always hungry Pokémon candy and stardust will help evolve them into more powerful beasts and increase those critters’ Combat Power to take down whichever creature or creatures are in charge.
These new Halloween treats may also lead you to adapt new strategies when playing and battling it out prior to, and during Halloween. For example, one may be to hatch, hatch, hatch, hatch, hatch in order to create the ultimate Pokémon battle team.
Of course, Niantic loves these extraordinary Halloween treats, too, because in order to truly accelerate your spawning strategy into the stratosphere, you’ll most definitely want more incubators to facilitate that level of mass Pokémon production—which undoubtedly means a few trips to the Pokémon Go store.
At 150 PokéCoins a pop, these Pokémon-hatching machines aren’t crazy expensive, but c’mon, Halloween is supposed to be for getting free candy, treats, amirite?! This sorta feels a wee bit like a Halloween trick.
Even so, Happy Pokémon Halloween!

The first documented set of identical twin puppies were born to an Irish wolfhound in South Africa, according to a paper authored by an international team of veterinarians and recently published in the journal Reproduction in Domestic Animals.
News of the unprecedented birth resonated throughout global media and social media outlets Thursday, with dog lovers worldwide rejoicing at the announcement and sharing photos of the adorably cute pups.
The historic discovery came amid a routine caesarean section of a 4-year-old female Irish wolfhound, the journal’s case report explains. The soon-to-be legendary mother had previously given birth to a litter of 10 puppies, the last five of which were delivered through a similar procedure.
When the surgeon “noticed a bulge” near the base of the momma pooch’s uterus, it continues, he made several incisions to investigate. That’s when the magic happened.
“Via a longitudinal incision into the body of the uterus, one foetus (Twin A) was delivered from this section of the uterus,” the journal explains. “A second foetus (Twin B) was immediately noticed within the same chorionic bag. Without rupturing either pup’s umbilical cord, the second pup and the placenta were delivered from the uterus.”
“Both pups’ umbilical cords, which were similar in length to the rest of the litter’s, attached to the same placenta.”
Five more “live, normal puppies” were also delivered, with different placentae, it adds.
Although reported in humans, armadillos, horses, cows, pigs, and in extremely rare cases, mice, the sharing of the same placenta by two embryos—called “monozygotic twinning”—“has not previously been genetically confirmed in the dog,” declares the study, adding that genetic profiling ultimately confirmed identical DNA profiles, a first in canines. “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of monozygotic twinning in the dog confirmed using DNA profiling,” it declares.
The study was authored by KGM De Cramer of Rant en Dal Animal Hospital in Mogale City, South Africa, JO Nothling of the Department of Production Animal Studies and the faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Pretoria, and CJ Joone of the Division of Tropical Health and Medicine at the College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences at James Cooke University in Townsville Australia.
Whatever the intriguing science behind it all, one thing’s definitive: These miracle puppies are two wildly whiskered cutesy adorable poochies, and have captured hearts and imaginations around the world!
