Restored Bridgehampton Home With 18th Century Roots Asks $28.5M

A historic Bridgehampton home that has been given a new life during a massive renovation in recent years has hit the market. Offered for $28.5 million, the house at 25 Quimby Lane is listed with Frank Newbold and Beate V. Moore of Sotheby’s International Realty.

Once known as Palmer Cottage, the home was originally built in 1700 by Albert and Cornelia Palmer. In the 19th century, the property was later leased to the inventor E.E. Quimby, a patent lawyer who sold lightning rods. He eventually bought the surrounding 32 acres and then built the country lane and family compound in his name. The home was rebuilt in 1902 in the cottage style and was expanded to include a third floor that boasted ocean views.

Chris Mitchell, the former publisher of Vanity Fair, and Pilar Guzmán, former editor in chief of Condé Nast Traveler and co-founder of social platform The Swell, purchased the home, now set on a gated 2.33 acres, in 2019. They oversaw an extensive renovation and restoration effort under the expert eye of Anne Sherry, a Sag Harbor-based architect.

The house had been stripped of its historical character by prior owners, the couple told Bloomberg in announcing their home is on the market. They took inspiration from the original exterior, Guzmán said. “We added on a wing, and we said we want to make it bigger, but make it seem like it was expanded ‘organically’ over time.

The home, with its covered front porch, features a premium quality, high-style custom design throughout the 12,000 square feet of living space on four floors, including a full finished lower level. During the renovation, they uncovered 30-foot-long pieces of timber that had been used as vertical supports and used them as room ties and ceiling details, according to the Bloomberg article.

There are a total of 10 ensuite bedrooms and 11.5 bathrooms. The bathrooms are outfitted with Carrara Bianco marble and Lefroy Brooks fittings.

The large, sun-filled rooms offer rift cut white oak floors and handmade mahogany windows. There are separate living and dining rooms.

The open concept kitchen and family room is the place where most of the gathering will likely occur. The kitchen with Paonazzo Caldia marble counters and slab walls, a 16-foot center island, a handmade brass china cabinet and Gaggenau appliances.

In addition, there is a spa, steam room, wine room, fitness studio and home theater.

The grounds include a 50-foot heated pool, a Har-Tru tennis court and an entertaining pavilion. A hornbeam allee features a 20-foot dining table.

There is also a two-car carriage house and a separate studio building.

The property is located on the corner of Quimby Lane and Ocean Road, just minutes to Bridgehampton’s downtown or Straight Beach at the end of Ocean Road, but is also in close proximity to the Village of Sagaponack. The property even comes with deeded access to Sagg Pond.

Customized Mattituck Home With Panoramic Sound Views Asks $4.8M

A custom-built home on the North Fork with sweeping views of the Long Island Sound offers plenty of space for relaxing or entertaining with a modern interior. The home at 1505 Naugles Drive in Mattituck is asking $4.795 million, making it one of the most expensive homes currently for sale on the North Fork.

The nearly 5,700-square-foot home is elevated on “an exclusive estate setting,” according to Susan Orioli of NOFO Real Estate. The property, just under an acre, was described as a waterfront oasis with a saltwater freeform pool, surrounded by a patio, and private dock.

The home offers six bedrooms and a five-and-a-half baths. It was built in 2008 “with precision and superb quality designer finishes,” the listing says.

With a traditional look from the exterior and a brick facade, steps lead to the front door, under a covered porch that wraps around the side of the house.

The double-height foyer with a dramatic chandelier leads to an open floor plan and large windows and glass doors take advantage of the breathtaking panoramic views just beyond the stone patio and waterside pool. The great room features a three-sided glass lineal fireplace with an unusual stone hearth and stone accent walls.

There are several different seating areas and a dining area, before you reach the gourmet kitchen, which is a chef’s dream. There are two islands and plenty of prep space and high-end appliances, including a gas stove.

A modern staircase leads to the second level, where a balcony wraps around the back side of the house. At the top of the landing is a family room with a fireplace, access to the balcony and views straight across the sound to Connecticut.

Celebrity Designer Asking Just Under $7M for Village of East Hampton Home

Acclaimed interior designer Waldo Fernandez is looking for a buyer for his unique home in the Village of East Hampton. The tranquil Georgica abode, just five blocks from the ocean, is now listed at $6.995 million.

Jack Pearson of the CeeJackTeam at Compass has the listing for the 6,000-square-foot home with modern-yet-rustic interiors that are said to be inspired by the celebrity designer’s travels to Thailand.

“Each area of the house is thoughtfully laid out, beautifully furnished and provides an inspiring setting for whatever the task at hand,” according to the listing.

Fernandez’s clients have included Elizabeth Taylor, Brad Pitt and Will Smith. He also designed the Architectural Digest Greenroom at the 84th annual Academy Awards.

His shingled-style home in East Hampton actually consists of three structures, built around a lotus pond, on 1.25 acres. There’s also a black granite infinity pool.

“Deep verandas surround the house and large louvered shutters sing out tropical lifestyle,” according to the CeeJackTeam. “Even the long approach to the house from the street provides vignettes that calm and nourish the creative soul.”

Inside, the main living area is an open concept. The kitchen has dark wood cabinetry to match the floors, professional appliances, and a butler’s pantry. The dining and living areas boast an impressive-looking fireplace and feature surrounding windows that look out onto the mahogany deck and infinity pool.

There are covered wrap-around porches on the first and second floors, where some of the bedrooms have direct access and views of the lotus-filled pond.  In total there are six bedrooms, six full baths, and two half-baths.

The home, built in 2006, has several bonus rooms, including a music room, located across a skybridge from the main house. There is also a separate media/living room with a full bath and massage room with half bath.

A finished lower level offers even more space with a laundry room and a fitness studio. Plus, there is an attached two car garage.

The property is well-landscaped, with lush bamboo groves.

“This spectacular property is like no other,” the listings says. We would agreed with that.

Fernandez first listed the home in 2014 for $9.5 million, according to CurbedHamptons.

A shingled traditional Hamptons home on a lush private acre near the water on Shelter Island is available for $2.85 million.

The 4,343-square-foot abode was built in 2006 with an open concept interior, and is listed with Seth P. Madore of The Corcoran Group.

The four-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath home begins with a great room with soaring ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that let in plenty of natural light. A brick fireplace surrounded by a stately wood mantle is the centerpiece of the room. A set of glass doors lead to the deck that overlooks the pool and backyard.

The natural light continues to flow into the kitchen area with an adjoining breakfast room that also boasts a wall of windows and a screen-in porch. The kitchen itself is well-equipped with Wolf appliances. A nearby formal dining room also benefits from oversized windows.

Former Montauk Home of Bernie Madoff Asks $17.9M

Bernie Madoff’s former oceanfront house in Montauk is back on the market, this time for $17 million.

The 1.5-acre property located west of downtown Montauk, previously put on the market in 2018 for $21 million, is listed with Chris Coleman at Compass.

The bungalow-style home, which was seized by the federal government after Madoff was arrested for a $65 billion investment scam, has since been updated and improved since the days Madoff and his family spent time there.

The developer Steve Roth and his wife, theater producer Daryl Roth, bought the property for $9.41 million— $660,000 more than the asking price. The money was used to pay back some of the 24,000 people who lost money in Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

The Roths hired Thierry Despont, the renowned architect who has worked for the likes of Bill Gates and Oscar de la Renta, for the extensive renovation of the 3,000-square-foot house, which boasts 180 feet of beach frontage and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The house is also within 150 feet of the beach —  no longer allowed under zoning laws.

Gone is the 1980s-feel of the home, including including the formica countertops (Madoff and his wife Ruth bought the home in 1982 for $250,000). Forbes once quoted a realtor as saying the house was “a 1980s dump set in a fabulous location.”

Among the highlights is a two-story great room that looks out onto the ocean through oversized glass doors that can be pulled back for the best in indoor-outdoor living. The room also features a barrel-vaulted ceiling, a stone fireplace, and curved sitting area, perfect for reading by the oceanside, Coleman says.

The gourmet eat-in kitchen is a fully equipped open space with room for a large table and also offers ocean views. A butler’s pantry is also located off of the kitchen. Sliders offer direct access to the covered patio, where another large table allows for al fresco meals to the sound of the ocean.

There are three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms with two bedrooms on the first floor, both with ocean views. Two full baths and one half bath is also located on this level.

Up on the second floor is the master suite, which offers its own private oceanfront deck. The bathroom features luxurious amenities such as radiant heated Travertine floors, a spa-like shower, is decked out in onyx, and even a separate balcony with an outdoor shower just in case you feel like showering outside instead. There is also a set of walk-in closets.

Coleman says buyers will find new mechanical systems throughout the house, including a Crestron-controlled environment that incorporates the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, audio, lighting, automatic shades and the radiantly heated floors.

A new free-form gunite pool, cabana, and wrap-around decking are located to the east of the covered patio.  The wide sandy beach is only steps away with private access on the southwest corner of the property.

The property is also now gated.

John Steinbeck’s Former Sag Harbor Home Asks $17.9M

A new year and a new chapter is set to begin for John Steinbeck’s former home in Sag Harbor. The Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist’s old house at 2 Bluff Point Lane on a peninsula overlooking Morris Cove and Upper Sag Harbor Cove, was listed Friday for $17.9 million.

Steinbeck and his third wife, Elaine, fell in love with the Sag Harbor cottage on the bluff in 1955. While Steinbeck died 53 years ago, and his wife died 18 years ago, the home has remained in their family.

“As soon as you arrive at this property, you know you have arrived somewhere special,” says Doreen Atkins at Sotheby’s International Realty, who is representing the trust that has put it on the market. “It feels like no other place in the Hamptons. This home is filled with local and literary significance.”

The couple, who married in 1950, first came to Sag Harbor after he completed East of Eden, and purchased the cottage a few years later. It was a newly found “Eden” for him, Atkins says, that inspired him to say: “I look forward to Sag Harbor—after seeing you, of course. And do you know, journalism, even my version of it, gives me the crazy desire to go out to my little house on the point, to sharpen fifty pencils and put out a yellow pad. Early in the morning to hear what the birds are saying and to pass the time of day with Angel and then hitch up my chair to my writing board and to set down the words—’Once upon a time…’”

In fact, a sign that read “Eden” used to sit near the front door.

He found inspiration there, and immersed himself in the small community. Despite having won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for Grapes of Wrath in 1940, he enjoyed anonymity in Sag Harbor, where he was known to walk around in a fisherman’s cap and rubber boots with his dog, Charley, in tow when he went to local dives like the Black Buoy.

In the mornings, he wrote from a gazebo-like structure at the tip of the property, overlooking the water, or even from his boat. He wrote an editor once, “I can move out and anchor and have a little table and yellow pad and some pencils… Nothing else can intervene.” He would spend the afternoons fishing.

From there he penned The Winter of Our Discontent, set in a New England village modeled much after Sag Harbor, and Travels With Charley, about his cross-country adventure with his dog, in which he called the village, “my little fishing place.”

In a 1958 letter to John O’Hara, he wrote, “I grow into this countryside with a lichen grip.” He lived there until his death in 1968.

The recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962, his memory in the village remains strong. In 2019, village officials unveiled the beginnings of the John Steinbeck Waterfront Park in the shadow of the bridge to North Haven.

The one-story, wood-shingled cottage has endured as well. Located at the end of a long lane on 1.8 acres, the property offers a rare 586 feet of waterfront that gently slopes down to the water’s edge, offering beautiful western facing sunsets.

The two-bedroom, two-bath house offers just 1,200 square feet of living space, but the interior offers plenty of character. The living room has wainscoting and wood beams on the cathedral ceiling. Bookcases line one wall, while French doors on the other lead to the patio. The kitchen opens to a sitting area with a wall of windows that overlooks the waterfront and the 60-foot dock.

There are nods to Steinbeck still. Above a large fieldstone fireplace hangs a painting of “Charley.” In a loft overlooking the living area, is “the Library Loft,” which Steinbeck reportedly created with bookcases on three sides. His hexagonal “writing house” out on the property’s point remains. With windows on all sides, it is a spot for respite and reflection.

A guest cottage on the property with views over the water has room to sleep two and offers a bathroom and an outdoor shower.

The property also has a free-form pool, or “Cement Pond” as Steinbeck reportedly called it.

“This opportunity has unparalleled significance—private, protected by topography of land, waterfront on two sides, upside opportunity for building, 60-foot dock and minutes away from the coveted Village of Sag Harbor,” Atkins says.

A trust set up by Elaine Steinbeck before her death in 2003 is selling the house after many years of legal disputes between John Steinbeck and Elaine Steinbeck’s families, according to The New York Times.

East Hampton Home, Former Club Where Jackie Kennedy Rode Horses Asks $1.9M

A 275-year-old East Hampton home, once the clubhouse for the Riding Club of East Hampton where a young Jacqueline Bouvier learned to ride, is back on the market for $1.995 million.

The property at 9 Cross Highway, now listed with Enzo Morabito of Douglas Elliman as of January 25, offers a rare opportunity to build two houses on one lot.

Known as the Abraham Baker House, it was one of about a dozen properties to receive a special historic landmark designation from East Hampton Town in 2017. Aimed at preventing 18th and 19th century homes from being replaced, the special designation allows the owners of these properties to build a second home for a combined square footage of 5,000 square feet between the two homes.

The 275-year-old house is approximately 2,000 square feet, allowing for a second 3,000-square-foot house to be built on the property. Just shy of one acre, the property also has room for a pool on the property, Morabito says.

The Cape Cod farmhouse, which dates back to 1745, was converted into a clubhouse for the Riding Club in 1924. The future Jackie Kennedy Onassis rode on the grounds and and went on to become a competitive equestrienne. It is not far from Wildmoor, the home the former First Lady spent summers in as a child and that belonged to her grandfather, John Vernou Bouvier Jr. The home at 55 La Forest Lane is currently on the market for $6.975 million with Sotheby’s International Realty.

The Abraham Baker House was turned back into a residence in 1943 when the Riding Club was sold. Today, the two-story, shingle-style home has three bedrooms, three full baths and two fireplaces. There are original wood floors, a study with wide planked wood paneling and even lockers left behind from the riding club.

While the property straddles the village and town lines, the south-of-the-highway home has an East Hampton Village address and is located just down the street from Town Mile Hollow Beach. It backs up to the village estate section.

Taxes are low for the neighborhood at $8,651 annually.

The property was originally listed at $2.29 million in early 2020.

Hamptons Beachfront Luxury Estate Asks $175M

A rare double waterfront, eight-acre estate with views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Shinnecock Bay with a 15,000-plus-square-foot residence has recently been listed with Bespoke Real Estate for a jaw-dropping $175 million. And, it’s exactly what you might expect of an exclusive coastal enclave listed at that mind-boggling amount.

The Mylestone at Meadow Lane is truly in a class — and not just a price point — of its own, even if it is located next door to property that traded in the most expensive deal of 2020. Billionaire Ken Griffin purchased a seven-acre estate from Calvin Klein for $84 million.

Candice Bergen’s East Hampton Estate Asks $18M

Candice Bergen and her husband, Marshall Rose, are selling their East Hampton estate with a coveted Lily Pond Lane address and an asking price of $18 million to match.

The 4,500-square-foot gambrel-style house was built by Rose, a real estate developer and philanthropist, and his then-wife, Jill, in the mid-1980s. It was an award-winning design by the late Jaquelin T. Robertson, of Cooper, Robertson Partners, who Rose and Bergen brought in to oversee major renovations in 2004, according to a spread in Architectural Digest. The Murphy Brown star and Rose, who married in 2000, wanted to turn it into a year-round home that reflected them as a couple.

“It’s my tribute to the history of architecture on eastern Long Island,” Robertson told AD.

They turned the downstairs into one long loft, remodeled the kitchen, added an enclosed porch that overlooks the lush gardens, and opted for decor fit for an East Hampton country home. “It was a beautifully thought-out house,” Bergen told AD in 2007 of the house Rose had shared with his late wife, “and it was a delicate challenge to respect its history but reinterpret it as ours.”

The six-bed and six and a half bath home is without a doubt quintessentially East Hampton, a light-filled space with a sprawling lawn, a wraparound porch and oversized French windows. The home features vaulted ceilings and several separate living areas.

The kitchen features a center island with a large pot rack hanging above and a commercial-grade Wolf range with a stainless steel backsplash.

The cedar-shingled house sits on a 1.8-acre lot, where there is also a guest cottage and pool with adjacent fountains. The well-landscaped property is hidden behind hedges.

Ed Petrie and Charles Forman of Compass have the listing at 72 Lily Pond Lane. The listing agents declined to comment.
