Registration for Recreation Camps Begins

The Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for the camps listed below. Registration is by mail only and is subject to age/grade restrictions. Children must be the age listed by the start date of the camp in order to attend. Information on each camp is listed in the articles below. Please make selections carefully as fees are not returnable.

To register for any camp by mail only, pick up an application at the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. Walk-in registrations are now being accepted. You can also make your own by listing your child’s name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the session and classes for which you are registering. Mail all information with full payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 108 Rockaway Avenue. Please make all checks payable to the “Inc. Village of Garden City.” Separate checks are needed for each camp. We cannot be held responsible for delays in the mail.

PeeWee Tennis

PeeWee Tennis is offered to children who are village residents ages 4 to 6. Eligibility is determined by the child’s age at the start of the session. Skills are learned by fun and easy to do drills taught by our tennis staff. Each child may register for a maximum of two sessions.

PeeWee Sports Sampler

Our very popular winter program will continue this summer in our neighborhood parks. In this four-day program, your child will get a taste of a different sport each day as our staff takes them through some fun skills and drills. The group will then make an arts and crafts project to take home. Children ages 4-5 who reside in the Village of Garden City are invited to register for this fun program!

Youth Basketball Camp

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting a Youth Basketball Camp for boys and girls who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City and entering second through sixth grades in September. Come join us and learn what it takes to pass, dribble and shoot in this camp. The purpose of this program is to provide instruction in self-improvement, basketball fundamentals, team play, group cooperation and most important of all, fun!
To take place at the St. Paul’s Field House during the week of June 29–July 2 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. for children entering second or third grades and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for children entering fourth through sixth grades. Fee: $75.

Preschool Camp

Our Preschool Camp is a fun way for children ages 3.5 to 5 years old who are residents of the village to spend the summer. Children who attend this camp must be 3.5 years by the start of the session. Arts and crafts, music, nature and stories will fill the 1.5 hour class, run by Pat Leonenko, St. Joseph’s pre-school teacher.

Boys and Girls Lacrosse Camp

For children entering grades two through six in September, here is an opportunity for youngsters who are residents of the Village of Garden City to learn the techniques of catching, throwing, scooping and shooting through fun drills. They will also learn the rules of the game by scrimmaging. This is a basic camp where no experience is necessary and equipment is provided.
Session 1 Week of July 6-9

Stewart Field from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. for children entering second or third grades and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for children entering fourth through sixth grades. Fee: $75.
Field Hockey Camp
The Recreation Department will conduct a Summer Field Hockey Camp for girls entering grades four through seven who are residents of the Village of Garden City. The camp will focus on individual skill development and the rules of the game as well as the importance of playing together as a team. Equipment will be supplied.

Youth Baseball Camp

Our department will again conduct a Summer Baseball Camp for boys and girls who are residents of the Village of Garden City. This instructional program is offered for boys and girls ages 6 to 12. Children who register for this program must be 6 by the start of the session. The camp will focus on individual skill development and the importance of playing together as a team. Youngsters in each age category will be divided into appropriate skill levels and will receive group instruction. Equipment needed: baseball glove, sneakers or rubber cleats.

Community Park’s Baseball Fields from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. for ages 6 – 8 and from 11 to 1 p.m. for ages 9 – 12. Fee: $75.

Yoga for Youngsters

The Recreation Department’s certified yoga instructor will offer yoga classes for boys and girls who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City, ages 6-14. Children attending this program will learn movements, postures and breathing techniques, which will help with relaxation, self-awareness and fitness. This program will be offered in two different formats (listed below).
Weekly class – this program will be offered every Wednesday morning for six weeks beginning July 1. This one-hour class is open to any resident ages 7–11. Where: Senior Center on Golf Club Lane; Time: 9:30-10:30 a.m. Fee: $30 One-Week Workshop
Week of August 10 -14
St. Paul’s Cluett Hall from 9–10 a.m. for ages 6 – 9 and from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. for ages 10 -14. Fee: $30

Theater Workshop

Our resident thespian will conduct a Theater Workshop for children ages 6 – 13 who are residents of the Village of Garden City. Studying acting helps develop social and personal skills. It also increases poise and confidence. During these workshops, the children will learn drama exercises, improvisation and staging while having fun.

Computer Workshops for Kids

Our Computer Workshops are run by Sharper Training Solutions, a company that we have used for years with our senior population. The children’s program we are setting up through them will cover topics that are useful in everyday life and enjoyable to the age group. Equipment needed: flash drive
To take place on the following Tuesdays: July 14, 21, 28 and Aug. 4 at the St. Paul’s Senior Center between 9 and 11 a.m. for ages 6–8.

All About Computers!

This four-week program is designed to teach basic computer applications to the younger child including PowerPoint, Desk Top Publishing and more! We will meet for four Tuesdays (dates above) and move through the topics according to the abilities of the children. Fee: $75

For the older child. Each topic will finish in its two-hour time block. Feel free to pick and choose your topics, or sign up for all four workshops! Fee: $20 per class, all four classes for $75.

Team Handball Camp

Come and learn the exciting sport of Team Handball, also known as European Handball, which is an Olympic Sport that is played all over the world. This quick moving sport involves a team of seven players that pass or bounce a ball similar to a small soccer ball in order to score on the opposing team’s goal. Our staff will teach the fundamentals of play as well as the rules of the game. This camp is open to children ages 10 – 16.

Tennis Camps for Ages 6–18

The Recreation Department’s Tennis Camp program offers children ages 6 and up an opportunity to learn or advance their tennis skills while working with experienced tennis pros in a fun setting. Our camps are set by age and children will be grouped according to ability within their camp. All sessions are held at the Community Park Tennis Center. The age of the child at the start of the session will determine which session the child may attend and proof of age may be required. Please read the information below to determine which camp your child is eligible to attend.
Please note that each child may sign up for a maximum of two sessions. Equipment needed: flat soled sneakers and a tennis racket.
All camps will follow the same session dates:

Novice Camp – For ages 6 and 7. This camp will teach serving, rallying, and the basics of a tennis game, keeping it fun for the younger tennis set.
Time: 2:30 – 4 p.m.

NOVICE SESSIONS D, E and F ARE FILLED
Junior Camp – For ages 8 to 11. For all levels of experience, this 2-hour and 15-minute hour camp will group players by ability so that everyone can move to the next level.
Time: 10 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Cost: $90
JUNIOR SESSION F IS NOW CLOSED
Junior Camp Plus – For ages 8 – 11 who are looking for a full day of tennis. This camp will provide tennis instruction in the morning, followed by lunchtime and a special activity, then ending the day with tennis matches. Children must bring their lunch to this camp.
Time: 10 a.m. – 2:15 p.m.

JUNIOR CAMP PLUS SESSION F IS NOW CLOSED
Senior Camp – For the student, ages 12 to 18, who is either looking to learn to play tennis or would like to get better at the game.

Volleyball Camp

This camp will provide instruction in skills necessary to compete in the sport of volleyball. Our staff will run separate boys’ and girls’ in order to tailor the program to the different rules of the game. The children will learn proper techniques in serving, hitting, and passing as well as the aspects of the game. This camp will be held in St. Paul’s Field House and is open to any resident of the Village of Garden City who is entering grades 6-12 in September.

Youth Soccer Camp

This instructional program will be offered for boys and girls ages 6 through 12.Youngsters must be 6 by the start of the camp and entering first grade in September in order to register for this camp. Proof of age will be required. This camp will be held at Community Park.
The two-hour session will run from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. at a cost of $75 and will focus on individual skill development. The five-hour session will run from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at a cost of $160. The five-hour session will include an hour lunch break and recreation session supervised by the soccer camp staff, to be followed by full field games.
The purpose of the program is to provide a fun-filled soccer learning experience incorporating the values of sportsmanship. Safe playing techniques and team cooperation will also be stressed. Equipment needed: Cleats or sneakers, shin guards and a soccer ball and lunch with drink if attending full-day program.

Adult Yoga Registration Begins

Connie McKnight, our certified yoga instructor, has designed classes with all ages in mind. Each class is 55 minutes long. All classes are held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul’s. Any resident of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes. The course schedule is as follows:
Mondays 7:30 p.m., 5-week session in June for $25
Mondays 7:30 p.m., 12-week session from June through mid-August for $60
Wednesdays 10:30 a.m. 6-week session beginning May 13 through June 17 for $30

Registration for Spring/Summer Adult Tennis Begins

The Garden City Recreation Department will conduct evening tennis lessons for adults who are residents of Garden City at the Community Park Tennis Facility. The lessons will run for one hour each week in three sessions during the spring/summer months. The registrant has a choice of a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday class and a choice of time. There will be a maximum of four players per court. The dates and fees will be as follows:
Session 1: six weeks beginning May 4, $120
Session 2: four weeks beginning July 6, $80
Session 3: four weeks beginning Aug. 3, $80
