Blood Drive
Hosted by Nassau Community College, in conjunction with Nassau University Medical Center, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Nassau Community College Center Building. Make an appointment by calling Barbara Vollmer or Dr. Friedman 572-7883 or just stop in. The process takes less than an hour and refreshments will be served to participants. Blood donors should be at least 17 years old, be in good health and bring identification. Although light snacks will be provided donors should eat before donating.

The Value of Volunteering
Free workshop hosted by The Long Island Volunteer Center, an affiliate of HandsOn Network, in partnership with Girl Scouts of NC. While volunteers provide support to any organization, they also connect with prominent leaders in government, business and other nonprofits. It’s here, at the grassroots level, that volunteers build meaningful relationships with the kind of influencers who make introductions, offer worthwhile advice, write referrals, and yes, even hire. Ways to access volunteer opportunities will be presented and the last half hour will be an optional one-on-one resume review. Free Health Screenings
As an adjunct to Catholic Health Services of Long Island’s “Healthy Sundays” community health initiative, Mercy Medical Center will host a special free health screening from 4 to 9 p.m. at St. Agnes Cathedral, Quealy Pl. (opposite the Rockville Centre LIRR station). Free screenings for blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and body mass index will be provided by staff from Mercy Medical Center, Good Samaritan Hospital Center, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, St. Charles Hospital, St. Francis Hospital The Heart Center, and Catholic Home Care. Defensive Driving Course
The Empire Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course, sponsored by Msgr. Workshop for Breast Cancer Patients
A free belly dance workshop is offered to those who have had breast cancer from 7 to 8 p.m. The workshop, a program the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is held at Adelphi University’s Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Ave., Garden City. Discover this captivating and beautiful art form from a professional belly dancer. Fitness professionals note that it can serve as a refreshing alternative to routine exercises. Blood Drive
LI Blood Services will hold a blood drive at The Garden City Library from 2 to 7:30 p.m. The bus mobile will be parked at 60 Seventh St. outside the library. Eligible donors must be between 16 and 76 years of age, with a minimum weight of 110 pounds and no tattoos within the past 12 months. Donors must have valid ID and know social security number. Aging Parents Presentation
Mercy Medical Center will present a free one-hour lecture on “My Parents Are Aging. What Do I Need to Know?” at 7:30 p.m. in the Mercy League Lounge on the hospital campus (located in the building opposite the hospital’s Emergency Department). Dr. Muhammad Ramzan and nurse practitioner Margaret Amodemo will discuss signs of aging that should be of concern, care and assistance that is available, and issues of importance that people might not even consider. The presentation will include information about Mercy Medical Center’s Geriatric Assessment Program, nutrition, prevention of falls, and the broad affects that an aging parent has on all members of a family. Blood Drive
Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre invites and encourages members of the public to participate in a Blood Drive to support LI Blood Services to from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the first floor of the St. Anne’s building on the hospital campus. Anyone between the ages of 17 and 75 who is in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Healthy individuals over 75 can donate blood if they present written permission from their physician obtained within two weeks of their donation. Donors should have eaten, bring reading glasses and ID with signature and know Social Security number. To register call Jeannie Jaeger at 705-2589 and leave your name and phone number.

Local Marines/ Families Golf Outing
The 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines Association will host its third Annual Golf Outing at Eisenhower Park on Aug. 3 to raise funds for the support of local Marine Reservists and their families. Play will take place on the Red and White Courses with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Check in begins at 10 a.m., followed by a barbeque lunch. Play will be followed by a buffet dinner at the Carltun. Proceeds will help the nonprofit organization provide comfort and support to family members of deployed Marines; care packages for those on the frontlines of the War on Terror; and if need be, funds will be used to assist wounded Marines or provide for the survivors of any killed in the line of duty.
