Mayor’s Report: July 16,2009

Fourth of July

I am pleased to report that this year was a safe one for our village. The police department has reported that it was a very quiet one and there were no incidents reported.

The Men’s Association Luau/Pool Party

The Men’s Association hosted the Luau/Pool Party for the 2009 Garden City High School graduating class. It has been reported to me that it was an amazing evening; the kids could not have been better behaved and the party was truly a testament to how a well-planned event can enfold without incident.

Many thanks to Dennis Mullins and The Men’s Association, the Garden City Recreation Department and D & J Refreshments, Inc., for sustaining this wonderful Garden City tradition.

Sanitation/Recycling Guidelines – 2009/10 Schedule

The Sanitation/Recycling Collection Schedule and Guidelines for 2009/10 were mailed to residents. I encourage you to review the schedule and to please retain it as a reference source for the upcoming year. If anyone has not received a copy, please call the Department of Public Works at 465-4003.

Please Water Our Village Trees

If you have recently had a tree planted in front of your home, please take the time to water it. The proper way to water is to first loosen the soil around the tree if it has become baked hard and then allow a hose to run at the base of the tree at a rate slow enough so that the water will be absorbed into the area around the tree trunk.

Watering hours are from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Odd-numbered addresses on odd-numbered days and even-numbered addresses on even-numbered days. Thank you for your cooperation.

Concert at the Gazebo

Once again, compliments are due to the Recreation Department for arranging the 2009 season’s outstanding Concert Series at the Village Gazebo, located on the Village Green at the corner of Stewart and Hilton Avenues.

This week’s program is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, and will feature Manhattan Sky. The program will begin at 7:15 and admission is free. Please bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a very pleasant evening. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at the St. Paul’s School. Please contact the Recreation Department at 465-4075 with questions pertaining to the concert.

Board of Trustees Meetings

The next board of trustees meetings will be held on Thursday, July 16 and Thursday, Aug. 13. The meetings will be held in the Board Room at Village Hall and will begin at 8 p.m.

Village’s Website

I encourage residents to periodically utilize the village’s website for information regarding the village’s operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.gardencityny.net. One item that is listed on the village’s website under the heading of Recreation is a listing of the hours for the Community Park Pool for the months of July, August and September.
