Over 60…And Getting Younger: July 24, 2009

A Summer Weekend

Who says you have to leave Long Island to have a great time in the summer? We have everything right here!

On Friday night we had reservations at Peppercorns Restaurant on East Marie Street in Hicksville with Paul and Jerilye Streich. The four of us were placed at a corner table, and it was cozy and easy to have a conversation. The service was gracious and the food was delicious.

On Saturday morning, my son and his brood invaded our home. It was pleasurable to see my two grandsons, Lewis and Alexander again. Lewis immediately grabbed a hose and began watering everything in sight. All the impatiens and tomato plants received nourishment. While he had the hose in hand he also sprayed our cars in the driveway.

Alexander, (the great) three-and-a-half months, just sat there smiling and drinking his bottle. Gregg and Jennifer, his parents, had carried enough baby equipment to start a nursery. They were sleeping over.

Saturday night we ventured to Woodmere to celebrate the mutual anniversaries of my dental classmates, the Greenes, the Kaners and the Greenbergs. We went to a Soigne French restaurant on Broadway which was beautifully appointed. For dessert we went to the Kaners’ for coffee, fruit and a lovely cake.

Sunday morning all the kids were up making noise before Lorraine and I awoke. Breakfast on the deck and a swim in the condo pool, and soon it was lunchtime.

In two cars we traveled to Oyster Bay to the Canterbury Ales restaurant. Lorraine and Gregg had lobsters and corn smothered in a pot with mussels and clams.

What to do next? It was 2:30 on a sunny day.

Off we went to Sagamore Hill to see the Teddy Roosevelt estate. An Irish concert was just ending. We walked around enjoying the verdant landscape. Old Teddy sure picked out a beautiful piece of property. At 4 p.m. the Rangers started to take the flag down. It is a huge flag and many adults and kids helped to fold up the “Stars and Stripes.”

Standing close by was a large, gray-haired man taking pictures. I approached him and asked him this question. “Have you ever been mistaken for Senator Carl Marcellino? He replied, “Yes, many times, because I am Carl Marcellino.” I was slightly embarrassed but I introduced him to my entire family. He really liked Alexander.

My son and his group got ready to return home to Manhattan. We kissed them all and we returned to Jericho, tired and happy.

Without leaving Long Island we had a fabulous weekend.
