Police: Man Preys on Joggers, Dog Walkers

A 28-year-old Hempstead man was busted last week for public lewdness and endangering the welfare of a minor when he allegedly exposed himself while performing a lewd act to a 9-year-old Garden City girl walking her dog.

According to Garden City police, beginning on June 8 the subject, Marvin Guandique, would borrow a relative’s car and travel into Garden City in search of female joggers and walkers. Police state he would then call the unsuspecting victims over to his car under the pretense of asking for directions. At that time, police state, he would then expose himself while performing a lewd act. On each occasion the victims would remember a small piece of information about the subject and vehicle, which would be passed along to detectives. Intensive patrols during the morning hours were conducted.

On Thursday, July 16, at about 10:15 a.m. a Garden City resident was out walking when a small green auto approached and the driver motioned her over to the car. Being a previous victim of a public lewdness, the victim refused and noted important information about the car and driver. She immediately called police.

According to police, shortly afterwards the subject then approached a 9-year-old girl who was walking her dog and exposed himself while performing a lewd act. The girl ran directly home and notified her parents who called police. Although extremely upset, the 9-year-old victim was also able to provide valuable information about the car and a description of the driver.

Garden City detectives pieced together all the information from each of the cases and were able to develop information on a vehicle and subject. An all-day search of the area by detectives resulted in finding the vehicle parked on a street in Hempstead. A surveillance was initiated and at about 6 p.m. a subject matching the description was observed entering the vehicle. He was stopped and upon further investigation, arrested.

The vehicles Guandique used were a 1995 green four-door Nissan Sentra 200sx and a 1990 gray Toyota Camry.

The subject was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and one count of public lewdness for the July 16 incident and two counts of public lewdness for the June 8 incident. He was transported to Nassau County Police detention pending arraignment in First District Court.
