Thunderbird American Indian Pow-Wow

Featuring three days of intertribal Native American Dance Competitions. Over 40 Indian nations will be represented. Chanting, drumming and brilliantly colored, finely detailed regalia. All dance competitions and performances will be narrated for your appreciation of the rich tradition and culture that is being shared. Native American craft vendors, artists, jewelry designers will be selling one-of-a-kind merchandise. American Indian food booths and non-Indian food vendors will be available. Held at the Queens County Farm Museum, 73-50 Little Neck Pky., Floral Park. Call 718-347-3276. Legendary Broadway tango star Nelson Avila dances and performs Art of Argentina with Madalyn Avila. Howard Leshaw brings the riveting sounds of traditional and modern Klezmer to the Floral Park stage.

American Red Cross Open Houses

The open houses will be held at the chapter’s headquarters, 195 Willis Ave., Mineola, at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. There is no need to make a reservation for one of these tours, but if you would like to RSVP, or would like more information, contact René Brown at BrownRene@usa.redcross.org. Come and find out why over 700 volunteers call the American Red Cross in Nassau County home.

Blood Drive

Due to the shortage of blood during the summer months, the Ecumenical Church Council of Floral Park will be hosting a blood drive from 3:30 to 8:45 p.m. at St. Elisabeth Episcopal Church, 6 Harvard St. Please donate as your blood will save other lives.

Local Marines/Families Golf Outing

The 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines Association will host its third Annual Golf Outing at Eisenhower Park to raise funds for the support of local Marine Reservists and their families. Play will take place on the Red and White Courses with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Check in begins at 10 a.m., followed by a barbeque lunch. Play will be followed by a buffet dinner at the Carltun. Proceeds will help the nonprofit organization provide comfort and support to family members of deployed Marines; care packages for those on the frontlines of the War on Terror; and if need be, funds will be used to assist wounded Marines or provide for the survivors of any killed in the line of duty. Award-Winning Acting Studio For Kids/Teens

A Class Act NY’s award-winning Manhattan-based acting studio for kids and teens still has a few spaces left in its One-Week Broadway Camp (Aug. 24 through Aug. 28) at the Sid Jacobson in Roslyn. Kids work with Broadway actors all week long in one-hour workshops. When kids aren’t in a workshop, they are rehearsing for their Final Showcase in which they make Off-Broadway debut at the JCC’s own theatre. Campers are bused to and from Manhattan on Wednesday to see a Broadway matinee in which they have a talk back with actors from the show. Ages: 7 to 16 (two groups split up according to age). Cost: $695 for members of the JCC; $770 for nonmembers. A Class Act is offering one free spot on a first come-first-save basis. To enroll, call Susan Kalman at the JCC at 484-1545.

Barbeque

The annual barbeque of Congregation Beth Israel Sisterhood will be held Aug. 23 at 4 p.m. at 141 Hilton Ave., Hempstead. Live entertainment, all-you-can-eat buffet, raffle prizes. Call for Craft Vendors

Mill Neck Manor is calling for vendors of handmade items for its Annual Fall Harvest Festival, held on Oct. 10 and 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A favorite tradition on LI, visitors eagerly await the festival for its crafts, apples, pumpkins, pies and other delicious treats. Country crafts, offering handmade items and holiday gifts, are one of the festival’s main features. If you make or sell crafts and feel that you would be a great addition to the Festival, you are encouraged to apply. Vendors are assigned an outdoor space (10’x10’) with a table and two chairs. All vendors are required to have a tent or canopy; those vendors who do not own a suitable tent may rent one from Mill Neck Manor for a small fee. Freeport H.S. Class of 1959 50th Reunion

Member of the Freeport High School Class of 1959 have planned a gala weekend to celebrate their 50-year reunion from Sept. 11 to 13. Begins Friday night with a meeting at E.B. Elliot’s on the Nautical Mile to renew old acquaintances. Saturday will find the group at Jones Beach Field 6 or at Museum Row riding Nunley’s Carousel once more, in the bleachers at the Freeport vs. Oceanside football game or just riding around the village visiting old haunts. At 7 p.m. converge at the Freeport Yacht Club for dinner and enjoyment of music of the ‘50s. Before starting home on Sunday, groups will meet at local diners for farewells over brunch. •Look Good…Feel Better, sponsored by LIJ Medical Center in association with the National Cosmetology Association, the Toiletry Fragrance Association and the American Cancer Society. The program reaches out to women with cancer and teaches them how to best apply makeup and wear their hair while undergoing cancer treatment. •Family Promise of NC. Are you concerned about helping homeless families in our local communities? You are invited to meetings for Family Promise of Nassau County, Inc., the third Monday of every month, at 7:30 p.m. at the New Hyde Park Baptist Church, 635 New Hyde Park Rd., NHP (352-9672 ). •Zonta Club of LI, a member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization with a local club. Members help advance the status of women and are involved in many community service activities.
