Nassau-Suffolk Coalition for the Homeless
“SOS: Supply Our Students” Back-to-School Drive through Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the NSCH office, 38 Old Country Rd. Call 742-7770 or go to www.nsch.org. Consumer Awareness Initiative
A representative from Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s Office will speak to the members of the Minneola-Garden City Rotary Club on consume fraud as part of Attorney General Cuomo’s statewide Consumer Awareness Initiative. Adam Levin, consumer fraud representative from Cuomo’s Nassau Office, will inform participants on how to best avoid consumer scams, such as sweepstakes, bank freezes, mail orders, fake charities, “phishing” emails, check cashing scams, and identity theft. Award-Winning Acting Studio For Kids/Teens
A Class Act NY’s award-winning Manhattan-based acting studio for kids and teens still has a few spaces left in its One-Week Broadway Camp (Aug. 24 through Aug. 28) at the Sid Jacobson in Roslyn. Kids work with Broadway actors all week long in one-hour workshops. When kids aren’t in a workshop, they are rehearsing for their Final Showcase in which they make Off-Broadway debut at the JCC’s own theatre. Campers are bused to and from Manhattan on Wednesday to see a Broadway matinee in which they have a talk back with actors from the show. Ages: 7 to 16 (two groups split up according to age). Nassau County Board of Health Meeting
The regular monthly meeting of the Nassau County Board of Health will be held at the offices of the Nassau County Department of Health, 106 Charles Lindbergh Blvd, Uniondale. The board will convene at 1 p.m. and adjourn immediately for an Executive Session to discuss personnel matters. Freeport H.S. Class of 1959 50th Reunion
Member of the Freeport High School Class of 1959 have planned a gala weekend to celebrate their 50-year reunion from Sept.11 to 13. Begins Friday night with a meeting at E.B. Elliot’s on the Nautical Mile to renew old acquaintances. Saturday will find the group at Jones Beach Field 6 or at Museum Row riding Nunley’s Carousel once more, in the bleachers at the Freeport vs. Oceanside football game or just riding around the village visiting old haunts. Anyone who has experienced a loved one suffering from addiction knows all too well that it affects more people than just the addicted; everyone close to a person addicted to drugs or alcohol feels the effects. Cradle of Aviation Museum
In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Epilepsy Foundation

• Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. These shows are appropriate for the 3rd and 4th grades levels but can be tailored to your needs. Programs are also available for junior and senior high classes. Exhibit
Adelphi University presents its 5th Outdoor Sculpture Biennial installed throughout the landscaped arboretum gardens and pathways of the Garden City Campus, 1 South Ave., through April 1, 2010. • Employment Referrals for Seniors. The NC Dept. of Senior Citizen Affairs is a resource to employers seeking qualified workers and to mature job seekers, 55+, who want assistance with employment and resume preparation. Services are free of charge.
• The Foster Grandparents Program is recruiting senior volunteers to share their time and love with children in Nassau County. Volunteers receive a non-reportable stipend, transportation reimbursement, paid holidays, sick days and vacation days.
• If you are 55+, make your spare time count. Join the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a national organization, and share your talents and skills at one of the many diversified placements.
Sons of Italy
Order Sons of Italy in America is seeking new members to join the America Lodge #2245, Franklin Square, Elmont, West Hempstead, Floral Park, Garden City, Stewart Manor and Malverne. A membership drive is currently in progress. The America Lodge #2245 is a co-ed lodge with many projects that enhance the preservation of the members’ Italian heritage.
