Serving Spirits at Spirit Day
The area at New Hyde Park Rd. and Dartmouth St. will be transformed into the annual playground known as Spirit Day. Rides, attractions, vendor’s music and food all add up to a memorable day. At 5 p.m., an outdoor Mass will be offered. The evening will culminates with the drawing of the Big Bucks Raffle winners. Breast Cancer Patient Workshop
Emotional Regulation Strategies for Wellness: Workshop Series for Breast Cancer Patients. The stress of breast cancer can bring additional problems such as headaches, pain and anxiety. Participants at this free workshop can learn more about emotional management tools that can boost the immune system for optimal wellness and symptom relief. Marianne LiBretto, a NYS licensed mental health counselor and stress/pain management/medical biofeedback specialist, will teach unique self-regulation techniques to help gain control over stress related symptoms and promote lifelong health. The workshop, which is a program of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Adelphi University’s Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Ave. The workshop is open only to those who have had breast cancer. Golf Outing
The 8th Annual Nassau Community College Foundation Golf Outing, hosted by the Nassau Community College Foundation, will be held at the Meadow Brook Club, Jericho. Registration and brunch begins at 10:30 a.m. Shotgun start is at 12:30 p.m. Cocktail reception and awards begin at 5:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Nassau Community College Foundation’s scholarship programs. This year’s golf outing recognizes three former NCC championship teams: the 1966 Baseball national championship team, the 1970 Lacrosse national championship team and the 1966 Soccer national championship team. Blood Drive
Nassau Community College, in conjunction with Nassau University Medical Center, will host its 15th Annual Back to School Blood Drive from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the NCC College Center Building. Although small snacks will be provided, donors should eat before donating.

Senior Exercise
Senior exercise begins a new season of keeping fit and improving health at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 420 Stewart Ave., near Clinton Rd. Led by Sue Salko, these co-ed classes are designed to improve balance, expand range of motion and increase muscle strength by using a series of specific exercises geared to the needs and abilities of mature adults. Classes will meet in the gym at 10 a.m., with subsequent classes scheduled three days each week, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10 to 11 a.m. All seniors are welcome and preregistration is not necessary. Wear comfortable clothing and sneakers and bring light hand weights (2 to 3 lbs) to class. There is a suggested $5 contribution per class. Call 746-4426.

Catholic Studies Program
“Catholics Confront the Challenge of the Great (Messina) Earthquake: Europe’s Worst Natural Disaster” will be held in the Nassau Community College Center Building at 7:30 p.m. The earthquake occurred Dec. 28, 1908 in the Messina Strait which separates Italy from Calabria. The quake’s magnitude was 7.5 by today’s Richter Scale. A devastating tsunami formed causing 40-foot waves to crash down on coastal cities. The death toll was estimated at 200,000. During his presentation, Dr. Salvatore LaGumina will speak about the disaster and the reaction to it. Free and open to the public. Registration and a parking permit required. Call 572-7472.
Garden City H.S. Freshman Barbecue – Class of 2013
The Garden City High School Class of 2013 is invited to attend the 6th annual Freshman Barbecue at 6:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The GCHS PTA organizes this event to welcome the 9th graders and ease the transition into an exciting new school environment. The evening’s $15 ticket price will include music by Lovett Entertainment, delicious barbecue food, games and raffle prizes. Calling all Girls/Parents Interested in Girl Scouts
Become part of the largest organization of girls and women in the world. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place/ Do you like crafts, science, math, camping, trips, helping others? Come find out what it’s all about. Girl Scouts get to make new friends, do community service projects, earn awards and to have fun. Many girls in Garden City waiting for troops and leaders are needed in order to place them. New girls are always welcome. There will be an informational meeting for parents and girls interested in Girl Scouts at 7:30 p.m. in the Garden City Library small basement meeting room. All schools in Garden City are welcome.
