Long Island Fair
The 167th annual Long Island Fair will be held Oct. 1 through Oct. 4 at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage. The family-friendly festival includes a range of attractions, including the Indian River Olde Time Lumberjack Show, exotic animal and reptile shows, pony and wagon rides as well as the amazing Flying Horses Carousel, a replica of a 19th-century folk art carousel. In addition, the fair will incorporate a carnival with a merry-go-round, a Ferris wheel and other amusements and games appropriate for children. The carnival fees will be separate from the OBV entrance fee. Children can take part in fun-filled contests. The livestock demonstration ring will feature the beautiful horse-drawn carriages of the Paumanok Driving Club and the miniature horses of the Keystone Miniatures Club. New this year will be Miss Emily’s School of Dramatics, involving audience participation storytelling. Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders will be encamped at the village and will give scheduled demonstrations of a soldier’s life. Call 572-0200.
Media Fix Workshop
Presented by The Fair Media Council from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Four Points by Sheraton, Plainview. Sponsored by St. Joseph’s College. This workshop is designed for businesses who are using or starting to use social media as part of their marketing strategies. This hands-on learning experience will cover basic etiquette for businesses using social media as well as explain the faux pas many businesses are making. The trainer is Eva Abreu, who utilizes social media in all aspects of her work. Media Fix Workshops are hands-on classroom experience, networking and a continental breakfast. Temple Chaverim invites you to its next event at noon at Temple Chaverim, 1050 Washington Ave., Plainview. This month’s speaker will be Elizabeth Ropers, a literature consultant who will discuss “ The Mystery of the Sarajevo Haggadah”- a richly illuminated manuscript originating in 1350. Ms. Roper will discuss its journey though time and the story of the Albanian Muslim Museum director who saved the book from the Nazis. Legislator Dave Mejias will be hosting a town hall open to all residents on how to hire a home contractor. There will be a presenter from the New York State Attorney General’s office to answer questions and teach residents how to hire a reputable home contractor for home improvements. 7 to 9 p.m. at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library. This is open to all residents and is free.
