Earlier this week, the commissioners of the Plainview Water District announced a pledge that the Plainview Water District did not raise its rates last year and will not raise its rates this year. The district’s conservative budgeting practice and strict cost-cutting measures, limiting expenditures, have allowed the district to maintain a strong fiscal outlook.
“We stand firm that the rates in the Plainview Water District will not go up,” said Plainview Water District Chairman Kevin Langberg. “We are the commissioners, but mostly we are members of this community, and we work very hard to provide the highest quality product at the most affordable price. This reinforces our commitment and assures residents that we constantly search for ways to consolidate costs and save the taxpayers money.”
Although many districts and municipalities on Long Island are resorting to increasing their rates in these tough financial times, because of the Plainview Water District’s long-standing fiscal responsibility, they will not.
“We feel a certain obligation to the taxpayers of this community,” said Commissioner Edward Shulroff. “It is our job to make sure the service we provide is of the highest quality, and it is equally important to do it at an affordable rate. This community is too important to us.”
In addition to being one of the lowest-priced utilities, the Plainview Water District also accounts for the lowest portion of your tax bill when compared with other services. The average homeowner contributes approximately 1.7 percent of their property taxes towards their local water supplier (including basic STAR exemption), as compared to almost 65 percent for education.
“While other districts and municipalities are raising their rates, we are staying true to our word and will not,” reiterated Commissioner Joel Kessler. “We will continue to work tediously and budget responsibly. It is not fair to the taxpayers and it is not fair to the community.”
