Safe Halloween Party for Kids

The American Red Cross believes that the trick to having a fun Halloween is to knowing how to remain safe. To help children learn about safety, the Nassau Red Cross will open its doors for a Halloween Safety Party. Children, ages 6 to 11, are invited to participate in the event which will include carnival style games and a haunted house. They will learn what to do if a friend is choking; what to do if approached by a stranger; and other ways to remain safe while trick or treating. Children are encouraged to wear costumes; however, they are to be non-violent with no weapons, nor full-face masks. Admission is $5 per child and attendees must register in advance. The party is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 195 Willis Ave., Mineola. Call 747-3500.

Halloween Bash Benefit

Stewart Manor Country Club, 51 Salisbury Ave., Stewart Manor, is hosting the 5th Annual Halloween Bash beginning at 8:30 p.m. Ghosts and goblins will enjoy a open bar serving top shelf drinks, dinner, prizes, raffles, trick or treats and more. The cost for this ghoulish event is $65 per person purchased in advance or $75 per person at the door – and all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. The Voysey Inheritance

Presented by the Nassau Community College Department of Theatre and Dance. The Voysey Inheritance is a play by Harley Granville-Barker, adapted by David Mamet. Performances Nov. 1 and Nov. 4 through Nov. 8 at Nassau Community College. The Voysey family has been cheating its clients. Edward, a junior partner who plans to take over the company from his aging father, is horrified when he discovers the embezzlement that has been keeping his relatives in the lap of luxury. But nobody wants Edward to dismantle the firm’s criminal legacy. As the risk of exposure looms larger, Edward comes to fully understand the consequences of his “inheritance.” Tickets are $9 adults; $7 seniors 55 and over. Rush tickets (tickets sold at the door for that day’s performance) are free for high school and college students with a current ID. American Chamber Ensemble

Present Musaic I, the first concert of its 2009-2010 concert season at 3 p.m. at Monroe Lecture Center Theater of Hofstra University, California Ave., Hempstead. Featured pieces will include Walter Rabl’s Quartet, op. 1 for piano, clarinet, violin and cello, Schumann’s Fairy Tales, op. 132 for clarinet, viola and piano, Mendelssohn’s Trio, op. 49 for violin, cello and piano, and contemporary American composer Joelle Wallach’s After Alcyon’s Dream for clarinet, viola and piano. The Friends of the Adelphi University Library is hosting its 14th Annual Fall Art Lecture with Sue Chase Harmon of the Brooklyn Museum of Art speaking on “Art for Eternity: Masterworks from Ancient Egypt.” The event will take place at 3 p.m. in the Ruth S. St. Joseph School Open House/Guided Tour

St, Joseph School, 450 Franklin Ave., which is devoted to integrating the teachings of the Catholic faith within a creative and stimulating learning environment, is hosting an Open House Guided Tour from 9:30 to 11 a.m., for Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten. Parents will be able to see how St. Joseph School gives young children an early advantage for life by providing a uniquely well-rounded education in a nurturing, small-group setting. School Board and PTA members and family members of current will guide parents through the entire complex, including classrooms in the Early Children Education Center as well as the modern playground and indoor gymnasium. This very personal tour will enable parents to get answers to any questions they might have about the school including programs and sessions. Nazi Art Looting: Tales of Discovery

The Jewish Studies Program at Nassau Community College presents the program Nazi Art Looting: Tales of Discovery by Dr. Evie T. Joselow at 2 p.m. in the College Center Building. The greatest theft of art in the 20th century was the theft carried out by Nazi Germany, beginning in 1933 and lasting until the end of WWII. Shrouded in secrecy, the Nazis launched a methodical and well-conceived campaign to confiscate and loot Europe of its most valuable art treasures. Prominent art historians, including museum directors and scholars, were called into service to identify and locate important works of art. During her presentation, Dr. Evie T. Joselow unravels many of the mysteries of Nazi art looting and offers a unique perspective on Nazi policies, ideas and methods by presenting personal family tales related to the looted art. Ed Rollins/Howard Dean to Speak

Political and campaign strategist Ed Rollins and former DNC Chair Howard Dean will have their first joint appearance together during the final panel of the Kalikow Center Symposium at Hofstra University “President or King? Evaluating the Expansion of Executive Power from Abraham Lincoln to George W. Bush. Meena Bose, Ph.D., will moderate the panel. In addition to appearing together during the symposium, both Governor Dean and Mr. Rollins will guest lecture, participate in university events and work with Hofstra students throughout the year. Free Workshop for Breast Cancer Patients

Choosing the Right Exercise Level after Breast Cancer. People who have been diagnosed with breast cancer are invited to a free workshop demonstrating how to choose the right exercise level after breast cancer. The workshop involves breathing techniques, slow body movements and “Thera-bands,” elastic bands that offer varying levels of resistance, enabling participants to work at their own level. Ballets Russes

Adelphi will feature performances of Sacre and Petrouchka through Nov. 8 in the university’s Performing Arts Center, Olmsted Theater, 1 South Ave. Prior to the inaugural performance on opening night, ticket holders are invited to attend a free wine and cheese reception in the Multipurpose Room, second floor of AU PAC held at 6:30 p.m. An exhibit titled “A Visual Celebration of the Ballets Russes – 100 Years” will include images of Russian ballet dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky who choreographed Igor Stravinsky’s Sacre du Printemps. It will also feature images of Stravinsky and the founder of the Ballets Russes Serge Diaghilev, among other historic photographs. Anglicans/Episcopalians Looking to Rome: 1570-Present

Presented by the Nassau Community College Center for Catholic Studies in the College Center Building at 7:30 p.m. Well-known Catholic author Monsignor Daniel S. Hamilton, Ph.D. will be the featured speaker during the program. The program will deal with those Anglicans and Episcopalians who have sought, officially or quasi-officially, some form of corporate reconciliation with the Catholic church from the time of the Elizabethan Settlement in 1570 to the present day. Dr. Hamilton’s lecture leads up to Pastoral Provision, a statute approved by Pope John Paul II in 1980, that facilitates the reception of Episcopal clergy, religious and laity into the Catholic Church while at the same time enabling them to retain elements of their liturgical and spiritual heritage. Post Election Fair

The auxiliary of the Garden City Community Church, Stewart Ave., is moving its annual Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is the beginning of a new tradition which will allow more people to shop and volunteer. Admission is free. There will be 15 sales rooms plus a cafe serving delicious luncheons of crepes, famous chicken salad and other treats. A hot dog cart will be located outside for the kids (little and big) to enjoy. Vendor boutiques will be in the parlor. The Silent Auction will offer antiques and collectibles. Attic Treasures will sell a variety and this and that. Linens, china, books, jewelry, frames, gourmet items and toys will all be available.
