TOPSOCCER

On a gorgeous fall day, the TOPSoccer teams took to the fields in a warm-up for next week’s showdown contest. The senior parents tried their hand against the senior players and it was a surprisingly close game. Bret Tirado starting the scoring with a hard shot from an almost impossible angle. The goalie was caught off guard and mishandled the attempt for the 1st goal. Stefani Egre rocketed home the next tally but the parents found some life and Stan Yang converted on a beautiful cross to make it close at half-time. The players opened up a 3-1 lead when Harrison Stein batted in what turned out to be the game winner off a scramble in front of the goal. Krys Abberton put in the last goal but it was a matter of too little, too late. Outstanding defense by David Glass who frustrated the adults all day. Great midfield play by Debbie Chin, Charlie Hinz and Billy Russo, who also had a well-placed assist on one of the goals. The offensive pressure was applied by dynamo Harry Owens and Adam Strominger. Robert Vittiglio was the difference in goal as he made super saves on many shots headed for the net. The juniors had their offense in high gear. The Lions had goals by Nick Mininson, Tristan Yang, Dave Baumgarten, Brittany Anderson and Chris Cooney. Mary Glass played exceptionally well as the goalie. The Tigers matched them with goals by Sam Duggan (2), Arta, Petros Panomeritakis and Kyle Hanratty. Petros and Kyle sparked the midfield with outstanding assists.

One week left and things are looking up for the parents in their end-of-the-season contest vs. the athletes. Perhaps this is the year to get on the winning side of the ledger. The TOPSoccer Awards Dinner is Friday Night, 11/13/09, at 6;30 p.m. at the Huntington Hilton. We’ll find out who was most affected by the celebrating and late night before this grudge match. Nassau Major Game Summary:NHP Lady Pumas – 2 GCP – 3 –

In probably the most exciting game of the season, the NHP Lady Pumas gave it their all against ‘the best’ team in Nassau County, coming up just short in the final seconds. The girls got on the board first when Katie Krems launched a rocket free kick into top back corner of the net from just outside the penalty box to make it 1-0 about 15 minutes into the game. Katie had apparently scored on another free kick (indirect) just before that one, but the Ref called it no-goal, even though it deflected off GCP players. The girls took the 1-0 lead into the first half before GCP put up 2 goals to take a 2-1 about halfway thru the 2d half. The Pumas kept up the pressure, and that pressure led to a Puma getting kicked in the box in the latter stages of the 2d half. Izzy Glennon put away the PK to tie the game 2-2 with about 10 minutes remaining. The girls had a few more chances to score in the final minutes, but the game boiled down to the final seconds when GCP put away a loose ball in front of goal to take a 3-2 lead with literally seconds left.

Puma Paws: Izzy Glennon had an outstanding game, tasked with holding down ‘Jenna’, she did a superb job at center defense, showing great athleticism. Stephanie Karczewksi and Kira Crehan were also fantastic on D and did a super job of playing physical and coming up with the ball on 1v1 chances. Mackenzie Griffin did a very nice job on D, pinching up and just missed on a shot in the first half. On offense, Tiffany Velin, Cara Becker, Theodora Papadoniou, Isabel Ugolini, Casey Sanders and Sophie Leeds all did a nice job flying down the line and taking shots that just missed. In goal was Edna Dudek who did a nice job blocking shots and punting. All in all, a tough, physical effort and against a tough physical team – a game that could have gone either way. The girls have nothing to feel ashamed of, and everything to be proud of.

NHP Roaring Tigers 3-0 Port Washington Piranhas The Roaring Tigers took on a tough and hungry Port Washington Piranhas team this week and after suffering a tough loss the previous week the Roaring Tigers needed to have a come back game to get back on track again. The game started slow with the Roaring Tigers winning most of the possession of the ball and leading the charge was Siobhan McMullan, Bethany Ambrosio, Shayna Zeitlin, Marisa Menist, Jordyn Siegel, and Dylan Sanders. Defense was tough and played a stellar game led by Camryn Dluginski, Ally Petricca, Lauren Perlman, and Deirdre Lynch giving Olivia Lugo only one little play at goal. With twenty minutes in Shayna Zeitlin replaced Olivia Lugo in goal. Olivia came in to the game like a Tiger scoring our first goal on the 24 minute with an assist from Jordyn to Marissa across the goal box and Olivia slammed it back of the net. Early in the second half the combination was back in action with a Jordyn to Marissa to Olivia for another goal. Later on in the half the team started playing more aggressive picking up the tempo and getting into the action of the game. Siohban perfectly positioned stole a goal kick and scored her goal for the game. Getting into the scrum of the game was Jordyn Siegel who was fouled in the box with minutes left in the game with a good try but just came up short on her penalty kick. We missed the help of Silvana Siedita.

Soccer Stars vs. Kitty Kats – Playing 5 teammates down, no substitutes, each and every Soccer Star played extremely tough. In goal for the Soccer Stars was Irene Krische who saved countless shots on goal. Great Goal-tending Irene K. and on defense, Channing Woo and Madeline Slaski holding very strong, running the opponent out to the sidelines. In mid-field, Isabella Mirro and Allison Liman breaking up plays by the opponents and following thru the ball to have control. On the offense, Daniela O’Modie, Marissa Cronin & Marcela Curcio playing very aggressive as Marcela Curcio not giving up the chance at a goal sprints pass the Kitty Kats defender and nets a beautiful goal in the far left corner for the Soccer Stars. Terrific Goal Marcela!! We could not be more proud of the Soccer Stars today for the tremendous team effort and team spirit they played with during the game. Thank You to All of our family & friends. Speedy Recovery for Irene Tsahas & Kassidy Keefe. Missing: Paden Dvoor, Lior Cole & Shreya Rao.
