Senior Exercise at the Lutheran Church
Co-ed senior exercise classes will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 420 Stewart Ave. Renew your energy, join friends/make new ones on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m. Designed for mature adults to enhance flexibility, maintain balance, strength and endurance, these classes are designed to address the needs and abilities of participants. Wear comfortable clothes, bring hand weights and Dynabands (also available from instructor). There is a $5 suggested contribution per class. All are invited. Workshop for Breast Cancer Patients
A free workshop, Simplifying and Organizing Your Lifestyle, is offered to those who have had breast cancer from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The workshop, sponsored by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is held at Adelphi University’s Alumni House in Garden City. This session will examine various aspects of everyday life and provide solutions to make life less complicated. Home and personal organization strategies will enable participants to take charge of their time and space, tame clutter, reduce stress and save money. Blood Drive
Nassau Community College, in conjunction with Nassau University Medical Center, will host its 15th annual Midwinter Blood Drive from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in Building K on the NCC campus. NCC invites members of the community to join our efforts and become donors at our College site. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old and in good health. Donors should come with some personal identification and eat before donating.

Interpreter Service Workshop
The Long Island Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (LIRID) and Mill Neck Interpreter Service of Hicksville present a workshop entitled How Do I Interpret This and That? Presented by Jimmy Beldon in American Sign Language, the workshop will be held on Jan. 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Nassau Community College in the CCB building, room 252. Beldon will provide an in-depth and practical understanding of skills for interpreters in both ASL and English. Participants will learn tips, receive feedback and have opportunities to take part in effective activities. Open to working interpreters, the workshop will earn participants 0.6 Continuing Education Units. Accommodations are available upon request. Registration deadline is Jan. 16. NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence
The Coalition is a member agency of the Garden City Community Fund, United Community Fund of Great Neck, Community Chest of Port Washington and United Way of LI. Call 222-2293 for information about the following
•Support groups with individual counseling for incest survivors and survivors of rape and sexual assault. Services are confidential and free of charge. These services are also extended to family members and partners of survivors. The Coalition also works to ensure societal accountability, improve institutional responsiveness to victims and increase public awareness in order to prevent domestic violence, rape and sexual assault.
•The coalition operates a safe home for battered women and their children. For women who are victims of violent relationships, safety is a major concern. The Coalition’s Safe Home for Abused Families provides shelter, advocacy and legal assistance, in a safe, warm, supportive, attractive environment. If you or someone you know needs help, call the 24-hour hotline 542-0404. The hotline and all services are free and confidential and a counselor can help you find safety.
•Volunteers needed in the coalition’s “Hands Are Not for Hitting,” an exciting domestic violence prevention program for elementary school children in kindergarten through 2nd grade. Volunteers will be fully trained and need to be available several weekdays a month during the school year. Volunteers must provide their own transportation. Elder Abuse
If you are 60 or older and are being hurt by someone who should be caring, you are not alone. If you are suffering from abuse, mistreatment or neglect at the hands of family members or someone who is living with you, help is available. •Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. These shows are appropriate for the 3rd and 4th grades levels but can be tailored to your needs. Programs are also available for junior and senior high classes. Exhibits
•Adelphi University presents its 5th Outdoor Sculpture Biennial installed throughout the landscaped arboretum gardens and pathways of the Garden City Campus, 1 South Ave., through April 1. The exhibition features the diverse works of 14 sculptors and is free and open to the public. Call 877-4462.
•’57 Panama Canal Collection. Adelphi University will showcase Global Passage: Selections from the Robert R. McMillan ’57 Panama Canal Collection, through Jan. 10 in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery, 1 South Ave. The exhibit offers a historical perspective of Panama, the Panama Canal and the Panama Canal Commission. It includes documents, books and other items dating back to the initial attempts to build the canal. There are materials related to the strategic and economic importance of the canal in today’s global economy. The collection consists of correspondence created by Robert R. McMillan, former board member and chairman of the Panama Canal Commission, official letters written by other board members and important figures. There are essays, articles and chapters included in Mr. McMillan’s book Global Passage as well as a selection of manuscripts centering on the Panama Canal.

In 1982 Options for Community Living, Inc., was established to help respond to the need for supportive housing for people living with mental illness. As the Mental Health Residential Program continued to expand, Options began serving homeless families as an emergency shelter provider in 1990. A few years later, Options opened a comprehensive case management and housing program for Long Islanders with HIV/AIDS. A small not-for-profit organization with humble beginnings has since grown to serve over 800 individuals and families with special needs across Long Island.
