Welcome 2010
The Floral Park Historical Society will hold “Welcome 2010” at the Floral Park Village Hall, Fireman’s Auditorium, at 12:30 p.m. The public is invited to join with members of the FPHS to relax and enjoy a special viewing of “A Walking Tour of Floral Park.” Take the video tour and enjoy snacks, desserts, coffee, and soft drinks. Jim Green, 4VS Director of Operations and Walter Gosden will talk about their experiences video-taping various sites throughout Floral Park during the Centennial Year 2008. Jim will also provide an update on the activities of 4VS, the local TV studio located in Village Hall serving Floral Park, South Floral Park, Bellerose and Stewart Manor. No charge. Winter Computer Classes for Seniors
If Santa brought you a new computer and you need some help, you can start off the New Year by registering for computer classes. EAC’s SeniorNet Computer Learning Centers in Hempstead and New Hyde Park are offering computer classes Jan. 12 and Feb. 2. The classes are for people who have never used a computer before as well as the more experienced user. Volunteer instructors and coaches make learning fun. Imagine sending emails to grandchildren, chatting with friends in other states and learning to edit and organize digital photos. The next John Lewis Childs School PTA meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the school auditorium. Fran Schneider, PNP, from Park Pediatrics will be discussing First Aid. Babysitting will be provided. A raffle will also be held. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Physical Therapy Wellness Talk
A presentation highlighting physical therapy and wellness for seniors will take place at the meeting of Floral Park’s AARP Chapter #5224. The talk is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Recreation Building in Floral Park. The featured speaker will be Dr. Vinod Somareddy (DPT), founder of Reddy-Care Physical Therapy in Great Neck. His topics will include safe and effective physical activity and exercise for aging adults, the benefit of balance/risk of fall assessment and senior proofing homes. Call 829-0030.

Hearing Aid Optimization Workshops
Advanced Hearing Center, 1163 Willis Ave., Albertson, is holding a series of free hearing aid optimization monthly workshops for those with hearing aids and their companions. LIRID and Mill Neck Interpreter Service Workshop
The Long Island Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (LIRID) and Mill Neck Interpreter Service of Hicksville present a workshop entitled How Do I Interpret This and That? Presented by Jimmy Beldon in American Sign Language, the workshop will be held on Jan. 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Nassau Community College in the CCB building, room 252. Beldon will provide an in-depth and practical understanding of skills for interpreters in both ASL and English. Participants will learn tips, receive feedback and have opportunities to take part in effective activities. Open to working interpreters, the workshop will earn participants 0.6 Continuing Education Units. Accommodations are available upon request. Registration deadline is Jan. 16. Fee is $50 per LIRID member; $75 per nonmember. Breakfast and lunch will be included compliments of LIRID. Voice interpreter services will not be available. •Look Good…Feel Better, sponsored by LIJ Medical Center in association with the National Cosmetology Association, the Toiletry Fragrance Association and the American Cancer Society. The program reaches out to women with cancer and teaches them how to best apply makeup and wear their hair while undergoing cancer treatment. •Family Promise of NC. Are you concerned about helping homeless families in our local communities? You are invited to meetings for Family Promise of Nassau County, Inc., the third Monday of every month, at 7:30 p.m. at the New Hyde Park Baptist Church, 635 New Hyde Park Rd., NHP (352-9672 ). •Free/Low Cost Health Insurance. The residents of communities served by Mercy Medical Center will have the opportunity to apply for free or low cost health insurance for children, families and adults up to age 64 on the first Thursday of every month from 5 to 7 p.m. in Mercy’s Main Lobby. Staff from Catholic Charities of LI will assist you and our children applying for Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus and Medicaid Health Insurance Programs. The bi-lingual enrollers will screen adults for income eligibility for the state’s health insurance program Family Health Plus. Children are eligible for Child Health Plus. These programs cover medical check-ups, hospitalization, emergency care, prescriptions, vision and dental care.
•Zonta Club of LI, a member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization with a local club. Members help advance the status of women and are involved in many community service activities. The name Zonta is word taken from the Sioux and stands for honesty, trust, inspiration and the ability to work together for service and understanding. At meetings members discuss and learn about issues facing women, develop and conduct fun fundraising that benefits community programs and network with Zonta International programs. •Eating Disorders Association-LI (NEDA-LI) (formerly EDCLI) will be holding a support group for eating disorder sufferers and their families and friends. 10 to 11:30 a.m. at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset (ask at the main reception desk for location within the hospital). FISH of Floral Park
FISH Organization of Floral Park provides transportation to and from medical appointments for residents in the Floral Park/Bellerose area. FISH needs volunteers for only one day a month as telephone coordinators who then contact regular or back-up drivers to schedule pick-ups, or as drivers who provide transportation to and from medical appointments. FISH provides the cell phone service and mileage driven is a tax deduction. If you wish to take part in this worthwhile service, contact Peggy Thivierge 437-8896 or Fran Hornberger at 775-0740.
Help for Seniors
Are you a senior who would like help paying for your Medicare benefits and prescription drugs? Free assistance is only a phone call away if you qualify for extra help because of limited income. There may be a way to alleviate some of the cost of Medicare – deductibles and coinsurance, Part B premiums, prescription drug plans (Part D). Reducing monthly premiums, annual deductibles and co-payments, aiding with coverage gaps (the doughnut hole).
