Owl Prowl
Winter is here and has brought crisp cool air, short days and owls. It is time again for the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center to offer the ever popular Owl Prowl programs. As a new twist this year the January Owl Prowls will take place at Planting Fields Arboretum in the Greenhouse Classroom, Oyster Bay. Featuring a live owl presentation, allowing participants to learn about and get an up-close look at these otherwise secretive hunters of the night. Learn about the Eastern Screech and Great Horned Owls. After the presentation, venture outside to listen for the calls of owls and attempt to attract these wild creatures closer. 7 to 9 p.m. Members $7; nonmembers $10.Registration required. Introduction to Birdwatching
With Project Feeder Watch from 1 to 3 p.m. at the at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center, 134 Cove Rd. The sanctuary has about 20 species of wintering birds. Learn the basics of birdwatching while helping scientists learn about winter bird movements and trends in bird populations. Project Feeder Watch is a winter-long survey of birds that visit feeders all over North America. Bring the whole family for a relaxing and fun afternoon bird count. Dahlia Club Meeting and Class
At the 7 p.m. Dahlias 101 class learn how to understand the American Dahlia Society Classification Book. Using what you learned will help you choose the best dahlia varieties to grow and show on Long Island. The 8 pm. meeting will be a photography presentation of newly classified dahlias. Artwalks
The Oyster Bay hamlet will be “the place to be” on the first Thursday of the month between 7 and 9 p.m. The program offers artwalks in the local galleries that will be open and featuring exhibitions of artists from around the world. Other businesses in the downtown area will also be showing artwork. Restaurants will be offering 20 percent off on meals; wine-tastings; burger and beer specials; along with indoor and outdoor music and art. Cafés and restaurants will be open for dessert and coffee specials and will also have art displayed. Currently Jessica Semins is a regular Thursday evening performer at Fiddleheads. She plays the fiddle and offers Irish songs as well as original songs. The artwalks will begin at Chase Edwards Gallery, 15 E. Main St. (802-0655) followed by a visit to the Atelier Gallery Fine Arts. 9 E. Main St. (205-0907) and The Teaching Studios, 115 Audrey Ave. (971-597-2404) which will also be open offering a workshop evening and a tour of their facilities.
