Volunteerism: Keystone of Garden City’s Unique Form of Government

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all residents, past and current, who volunteer on the Village’s Boards and Commissions, as well as members of our Special Police and Volunteer Fire Department. While there is great personal satisfaction to all volunteers who spend time away from their families — missing birthdays, concerts, etc., it is with this in mind that we extend a special word of gratitude to their spouses and families who share them and demonstrate their own wonderful community spirit. We often take for granted the tremendous time, talent and effort extended by all of those residents who participate as officers and directors in our four Property Owners Associations. It is the result of their tireless efforts that perpetuate our unique Community Agreement form of government.

On a Personal Note:

I offer my congratulations to the incoming Community Agreement Party slate of candidates:

Donald T. Brudie Trustee – two-year term

John J. Watras Trustee – two-year term

Nicholas P. Episcopia Trustee – two-term

Brian C. Daughney Trustee – two-year term

Since the incorporation of the village in 1919, members of the board of trustees in Garden City have been elected by a non-partisan vote of residents in accordance with the policies of the Community Agreement. Our Community Agreement Party has served us well, and I urge residents to support the above slate.

Board of Trustees Work Sessions

The board of trustees will be conducting work sessions to review the proposed 2010/11 Operating/Capital Budgets on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 27 at 8:30 a.m.; and Wednesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. These sessions will be held in the Board Room at Village Hall. These sessions are conducted in public but will not provide for public participation.

Board of Trustees Meeting Schedule

The next regularly scheduled board of trustees meetings will be held on Thursday, March 4 and Thursday, March 18 at 8 p.m.

Correct Dates for Solicitation

In last week’s column there was information about groups that have permits for solicitation within the village. The wrong dates were listed for the New York Youth Club. The permitted dates that they have for soliciting within the village are as follows: Saturday, March 13; Saturday, May 1; Saturday, May 8; Saturday, July 3; Saturday, July 10; and Saturday, Aug. 28. I am sorry if this has caused any inconvenience.

Village’s Website

I encourage residents to periodically utilize the village’s website for information regarding the village’s operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.garden cityny.net. For your convenience, listed on the village’s home page (under the Heading of Administration) is information listing Village Hall hours and a directory with the telephone numbers of village department heads.
