Seventh and Eighth-Grade Rec. Night

The Garden City Recreation Department is sponsoring a Middle School Rec. Night for seventh- and eighth-graders on Friday, March 5 in St. Paul’s Fieldhouse. This party will be chaperoned by the Recreation staff and will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $5. A DJ will provide music and refreshments will be available for a nominal charge. The gym will be open for basketball, volleyball, dancing and other games.

Please note: Once the children are in our facility for this activity, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come into the building to pick up your child. For further information, call the Recreation Office at 465-4075.

Roller Hockey Program

The Garden City Recreation Department is proud to announce its Spring Roller Hockey Program. Whether you played last season or haven’t played in a couple of years, now is the perfect time to sign up and experience all the fun. The spring season is set to begin the weekend of Friday, April 9. This season we are excited to be adding a new program for ages 14-16. All programs take place at Community Park’s Roller Rink. Registration dates and fees will be announced in an upcoming column.

 A reminder: Each participant is required to wear full equipment at all times. This includes: Hockey helmet with cage, hockey gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, roller blades, hockey stick, long pants, and a protective cup.

Roller Hockey Clinic

Learn and Play Program Roller Hockey Clinic for children, ages 5-7. This eight-week program has been designed to introduce the exciting game of Roller Hockey. No experience is required in hockey or roller-skating as this is a Beginners Program. This hour-long clinic will take place on Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m.

Roller Hockey Leagues are broken into age groups. Please pay careful attention as our age groupings and dates/times have changed.

Mites Division is for 6- and 7-year-olds who have basic skating skills. Since this division is games only, if your child is new to the sports, you should register them for the learn and play clinic. Games will take place on Sunday afternoons with either a 3:15 or 4:30 p.m. start, depending on your child’s team schedule.

Junior Division, ages 8 through 10, will play on Friday afternoons

With either a 4 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. start depending on your child’s team schedule.

Senior Division, ages 11 through 13, will play on Friday evenings at either 6:45 or 8 p.m. depending on your child’s team schedule.

New – High School Open Hockey – for ages 14 to 16. Games will be played on Sundays at 5:30 p.m. in a “pick up” format.

Adult Division for ages 30 and over – games will take place on Sunday evenings at 7:15 p.m., with an occasional “Friday night under the Lights.” Games are in “pick up” format.

Men’s Spring Softball Applications

League slots are limited so prompt action is recommended.

Adult Dance Classes

Are you looking for a fun way to stretch and tone your body? The Recreation Department is offering dance classes to help move those muscles and get back into shape. The adult ballet class is a fun way to exercise and the classes are geared to remember the “little ballerina” in you, whatever level that might be. The stretch and tone class offers simple dance movements, stretching and other exercises to music designed to add flexibility to your body.

The schedule of classes is as follows:

Adult Ballet (Began March 2) Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m.

Adult Stretch (Began Feb. 11) Thursdays at 9:15 a.m.

All classes are lead by Felicia Lovaglio, director of our Dance Conservatory and adjunct professor at Adelphi. Each class is one hour long and will be held in Cluett Hall. Preschool Arts and Crafts Registration

There are limited openings available for the Recreation Department’s Preschool Arts and Crafts program on Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. This 45-minute program is open to any child who is 3 and a half to 5 years old and a resident of the Village of Garden City. The cost of this 5-week program is $25. For further information or to register, please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave.

Morning Peewee Sports Sampler

The Garden City Recreation Department is proud to announce it will offer a morning session of the very poplar Pee-Wee All Sports Sampler program for children ages 4 and 5 who are residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City. This program began on Tuesday, March 2 and will run for four weeks. Program time will be 10:45 a.m.

This program will be instructional, incorporating new skills and free play in a non-competitive atmosphere. A different sport will be offered each week. Please note: your child must be 4 years old by the start of the session in order to participate.

The cost of this program will be $32. To register for this program, please fill out the registration form and submit with payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 108 Rockaway Ave.
